Buying Guide for Measurement Tools

Measuring and other tools are devices that simplify and quicken your work at home, shop floor or in a tool room. Such tools are operated manually or electrically operated.

These tools are very popular among do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiasts and have been ubiquitous in industry, construction site and manufacturing sectors. Hand Truck/trolley, stainless steel rule, tire gauge, diamond blade, feeler gauge, wire brush, micrometer, laser line level and dial indicator are some common types of measuring and other.

Choose your Measuring and other

Measuring and other tools are available in a wide variety and you can choose your tool based on the type with desired features, type of the job or purpose, size and cost.

Hand truck – Also known as trolley, is a L-shaped handcart with a small ledge to set objects such as factory loads, baggage on, flat against the floor. The truck and the loaded objects are tilted backward until the weight is balanced over the large wheels, in order to move bulky and heavy objects easily, using less effort. Some hand trucks are designed with stair climber wheels to take loads up and down the stairs. Hand Truck/Trolley (SMT00103) with puncture proof wheels that allow easy and effortless movement and heavy-duty construction for extra strength, is durable and a good choice for transporting sacks, small machines and drum handling. Magic Trolley 4 in 1 Compact & Lightweight made of solid steel, can be used as a hand truck, dolly, flat bed cart or stepladder to help you with any task around the home, yard or workplace.

Stainless steel rule – This measuring or marking tool is indispensable in any workshop and in a DIY enthusiast’s kit. An inch rule is usually marked with standard increments of inches and has metric markings on the opposite edge or reverse side. Metric rules are quite easy to read, as they are marked in centimeters and further divided into ten equal millimeters. Some inch rules are designed with special features for use by hobbyists or machinists. Kincrome STAINLESS STEEL RULE 6inch and Kincrome STAINLESS STEEL RULE 12inch are good choices for stainless steel rules.

Tire gauge – This is used for measuring the air pressure in pounds per square inch (PSI), in a wheel or tire. Tire gauges come in different forms. Ballpoint pen type tire gauge is one of the most popular types. This type has a rounded tip with a small opening, on one end and a post in the center. This tip is designed to fit comfortably over the inflation valve of a standard tire. WTD Heavy Duty Tyre Gauge is a very good quality unit that comes with pressure relief valve and rubber covered dial.

Diamond blade – This circular saw made from hot press sintered diamond, is used in construction sites for cutting abrasive or hard materials like concrete, brick, tile, marble, block, stone and other similar materials. This tool provides a fast and smooth cut and is usually designed with a steel core whose type is varied based on the type of material to be cut. Blades with larger diameter are the apt ones for use on high-speed hand held saw and table saw. Blades with smaller diameter can be used on a grinder or skill saw. DIAMOND BLADE SEGMENTED and DIAMOND BLADE TURBO could be few of them.

Feeler gauge – This simple tool is used for measuring gap-widths or clearance between two parts or pads. Feeler gauge usually has a number of small lengths of steel with measurements, of precisely predetermined thickness. Feeler gauges are also used to set the gap in spark plugs to determined sizes. KC Tools 26 BLADE FEELER GAUGE DUAL MARKINGS and KC Tools 32 BLADE FEELER GAUGE WITH BRASS BLADE are good choices for blade feeler gauges.

Wire brush – This is generally used for cleaning, deburring, metal finishing, weld cleaning, honing, polishing and other surface finishing jobs. Wire brushes improve repeatability and cycle times of the finishing process. You can choose WIRE BRUSH WHEEL for 150mm bench grinder. 1/4 SHANK CUP WIRE BRUSH is also a good choice.

Micrometer – Such type of device gives precise measuring thickness of blocks, outer and inner diameters of shafts and depths of slots. Micrometers are mostly preferred for their accuracy, which is their advantageous feature, compared to the other measuring instruments like Vernier caliper and screw gauge. The precision of a micrometer is achieved by using a fine pitch screw mechanism. Outside diameter (OD) micrometer, inside diameter (ID) micrometer and depth micrometer are the three common types of micrometers. Kincrome DIGI/MICROMETER allows zero reset in any position, metric/Inch conversion and is auto switch off. Jutco 8pce MM Jumbo Micrometer Set offers 8 qualities outside Mikes with sizes from 0 to 200mm.

OD micrometer – is used to measure diameter of wires, spheres, shafts and blocks. Kincrome MICROMETER EXT 25MM-50MM and Kincrome MICROMETER EXTERNAL 0-25MM have enameled frame with heat plates, satin chrome thimble and carbide tipped measuring faces ratchet.

ID micrometer – is used for measuring the diameter of holes. Jutco Inside Micrometer has size range 5-30mm and 0.01mm accuracy.

Depth micrometer – measures depths of slots and steps.

Laser line level – Such type of tool consists of a spirit level and/or pendulum with a laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) to indicate a levelled line against a surface. Hand laser line levels are omnipresent in surveying, construction and cabinetry industries. A tower-mounted laser level is used in combination with a sensor on a wheel tractor-scraper in the process of land levelling to make the land or an agricultural field flat. You can choose Ultrasonic Measuring Laser Level for instantly measuring the dimensions, area and volume of the interior of any room. It includes a built-in vial and laser for easy referencing of target areas, has measuring precision as +-0.057 Degrees and is simple to use with one-button operation and memory/math functions. Multi Purpose Laser Level could also be a good choose.

Dial indicator – Also known as dial gauge or dial test indicator (DTI), it consists of a plunger with gear teeth that engages with a gear on the indicator needle to provide a visual indication of slight variations in the grade of a surface. Dial indicators are used to check for consistency and accuracy in a manufacturing process, in a shop floor to initially set up or calibrate a machine, prior to a production run and for centering a work piece in a lathe chuck. Kincrome DIAL INDICATOR MM has range 0-10mm in 0.01 graduations. You can get Kincrome DIAL INDICATOR A/F that has range 0-1" in 0.001" graduations, 10mm or .50" travel and is fitted with back lug.

Telescopic gauge set – This is used for measuring bore diameter and groove width. The gauge set includes a spring-loaded plunger, which expands within the hole and a knurled locking screw that holds plunger contacts in position. You can choose Kincrome TELESCOPIC GAUGE SET for measuring upto 6 inches.

Points to be considered while getting Measuring and other tools

Weight constraint – Ensure that you check the weight of the tool before making a purchase. Heavy tools cannot be moved around, which in turn slows down your work.

Tool material – Material of the tool should be considered to ensure more durability.

Tool handle – You should keep in mind to check the size of the handle, in order to ensure that your tool handle properly fits in your hand.

Price and space constraint – You can choose a tool set in which multiple tools are packed in one if price and space are a constraint. Jutco 4pce MM Jumbo Micrometer Set, Kincrome MICROMETER SET EXT 4 PCE and Kincrome TELESCOPIC GAUGE SET could be few of them.
