Fifty Machines that Changed the Course of History charts the development of human civilisation through the machines it has produced. With entries ranging from the pre-eminent inventions of the First Industrial Revolution to the items that have revolutionised communications, it gives the historical and technological context behind the devices that, in their time, were pushing the boundaries of what was possible. About the Author Eric Chaline is a journalist and writer specialising in history, philosophy and religion. A graduate of Cambridge University and The School of African and Oriental Studies, London, he lived in Tokyo for seven years where he was English-language editor for Kodansha Publishers. More recently he hss published titles on philosphy, including The Book of Zen, and The Book of Gods, and on history, including Travelers Guide to the Ancient World: Ancient Greece, Historys Worst Inventions, Historys Greatest Deceptions, Historys Worst Predictions, Fifty Animals that Changed the Course of History and the forthcoming Fifty Minerals that Changed the Course of History. He now lives and works in London, where he is conducting doctoral research in sociology at South Bank University.
