Mountaineering is the combination of many activities, including backpacking, orienteering, weather forecasting, hiking, and climbing. A reliable source is needed to serve as a general reference for all of these activities. The Freedom of the Hills has addressed this need since its first printing in 1961. Beginning and advanced climbers will find the thorough descriptions extremely useful for demystifying the hundreds of subtle techniques included in climbing. Also included are sections on mountain feature terminology, mountain weather and navigation. The book is hefty in size and serves as an excellent reference for the self taught mountaineer. The 7th edition, includes new additions of chapters on land stewardship and physical conditioning. The illustrations are basic drawings that aim to inform the reader rather than dazzle the eye. Its limitations lye in the high end aspects of the activity it teaches. For example, The Freedom of the Hills teaches how to swing an ice tool, but does not cover how to cam an ice tool into the rock for mixed climbing. Personally which, I found appealing. The Freedom of the Hills is a text book that illustrates the foundation of climbing in a clean and concise package that is a required addition to any climbers library.
