The Sony Ericsson company has announced today (Tuesday) the expansion of the cellular Walkman series. The series was characterized with music devices of high quality sound, which were much criticized because they were relatively limited in the technological aspect in all fields unrelated to music.

The cameras in these devices had a resolution of two megapixels and the Walkman series had almost no change in hardware – compared to other series of devices which developed in time. The only changes that were made in the series were changes in external look (slider, clamshell, and candy bar) and software improvements.

Although the launch occurred only two weeks after the launch of the new iPhone, it seems like Sony Ericsson hadn't really produced a competitor for the much desired Apple device.

From Third World to a Prestigious Public

As predicted, Sony Ericsson is releasing three new devices of the Walkman series to various audiences. The devices also turn to the prestigious public with the W902, also to the middle class public with the W595 and also to third world countries with the W305.

It is unknown yet whether the devices are supposed to arrive in Australia, but a source in the industry said that apparently we'll see at least one of them on the shelves in the country. The new Walkmans are supposed to hit the stores by the last quarter of 2008. If they arrive here, it'll happen by the first quarter of 2009.

The Devices

W902 - The company's premium device, generation 3.5, with a five megapixel camera with automatic focus, Walkman player, the TrackID to identify songs, a radio, a 2.2" screen with a QVGA resolution and an 8GB memory card (M2 type).

W595 – a 3.5 generation device, with a 3.2 megapixel resolution camera, a Walkman player, the TrackID for song identification, an integrated radio and a 2GB memory card (M2 type).

W305 – A simple EDGE device (generation 2.5) with a two megapixel camera, Walkman player, the TrackID software, integrated radio and stereophonic Bluetooth support.
