The grandfather of Patience Gromes escaped from slavery at age 14. This book traces Patience and her family for a hundred years — from the Civil War to the War on Poverty.After the War Patience and her peers left the country and came to the city. Specifically, they left rural districts of North Carolina and Virginia and moved to the Fulton neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia. As the century progressed, they married, took jobs, purchased houses, raised families — and triumphed during Civil Rights. Then, in the late 1960s, came a complex new world in which Patience and other of her generation could scarcely survive. Ultimately, it was the bulldozers of urban renewal that concluded her story.This award-winning nonfiction narrative explores nuances of ideals, race, and class that are mirrored in the lives of African-Americans all over the United States. And it is a cautionary tale for those who would destroy traditional front-porch communities and remake them on the suburban model.
