Know about wrenches before you buy

A wrench is a tool that is used to turn bolts, nuts or other threaded fasteners, using gripping jaws. Wrenches are also known as spanners and are available in a wide variety.

Box wrench – Such a type of wrench featuring an enclosed end that grips the nut, is a tube with 6-sided sockets on both ends. This wrench is turned with a T-bar inserted through two holes in the middle of the tube.

Flare-nut wrench – Also known as tube wrench or line wrench, this type of wrench is used for gripping the nuts on the ends of tubes. The design is similar to a box-end wrench but has an opening to allow the wrench to fit over the tube.

Crescent wrenches – Such wrenches are crescent-moon shaped with an open end and two gripping surfaces.

Combination wrenches – Such wrenches are double-ended tools featuring two equally sized wrench ends that fit the same size bolt. One is an open-end wrench and the other end designed like a box-end wrench.

Adjustable wrenches – Such wrenches have adjustable wrench heads for different-size nuts and bolts. Pipe wrench is of the adjustable type that provides an improved grip without the need for excessive torque.
