In 1899, Sidney Myer landed in Melbourne. A penniless immigrant from Russia, he created one of the biggest retail businesses in the country. Working briefly at a Flinders Lane drapery store, he and his brother opened the first Myer store in 1900 in Bendigo. After enjoying continued prosperity, in 1908 they opened another Myer store. Sidney bought a Bourke Street drapery store in 1911 and then bought the neighbouring properties. He built a department store - the Myer Emporium - on the site. He later expanded to Adelaide and then across the country. Myer is now a market leader in Australian retail with sixty five stores across the nation. In fact, it was the first retail chain to have a store in every state.
