The Essential Yusuf Idris: Masterpieces of the Egyptian Short StoryFrom $33.17
Yusuf Idris (1927-91), who belonged to the same generation of pioneering Egyptian writers as Naguib Mahfouz and Tawfiq al-Hakim, is widely celebrated as the father of the Arabic short story, just as Mahfouz is considered the father of the Arabic novel. Idris studied medicine and practiced as a doctor, but even as a student his interests were in politics and the support of the nationalist struggle, and in writing-and his writing, whether in his regular newspaper columns or in his fiction, often reflected his political convictions. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize for literature more than once, and when the prize went to Naguib Mahfouz in 1988, Idris felt that he had been passed over because of his outspoken views on Israel. In all, Yusuf Idris wrote some twelve collections of superbly crafted short stories, mainly about ordinary, poor people, many of which have been translated into English and are included in this collection of the best of his work. But although he is best known for his short stories, he also wrote nine plays and a number of novels and novellas, the best of which are also sampled here.

Deep within Mexico lies a complex labyrinth to a feminine world. Sara Sefchovich explores that world with the story of two sisters and their close relationship despite the distance between them. One day, she encounters a great love in her life that comes along with new flavors, aromas, colors, places and pleasures that fit into the vast landscape that is Mexico.
Los Jefes los CachorrosFrom $11.9
These stories contain the trademarks that later would denote Mario Vargas Llosas masterpieces and make him a pioneer of Latin American Literature; they are shocking and surprising, and contain his unmistakable style. Through the teenage protagonists of both works, he ponders upon tyranny and violence of a society in which one cannot let down the expectations of others. With an exceptional narrative talent, Vargas Llosa gives life to a diverse world.
Mexico Mutilado: La Raza MalditaFrom $23
General Antonio L?pez de Santa Anna, several times president of Mexico, is the main character of this novel by best-selling Mexican author, Mart?n Moreno. It covers the historical period (1846-1848) in which Mexico saw its territory reduced to half due to the expansionistic pressure of the United States, the ambition and treasons of those who held power, and because by then it was already outlined in the future of the nation that it would be subject to traitors, thieves, and dishonesty by those in power.
