Best of Grand Designs Free ShippingFrom $41.25
A complete celebration of Britain's favourite architectural show. Grand Designs is broadcast in over 130 countries and regularly gleans 5 million viewers in the UK. Its success, says Kevin, is due to 'good old-fashioned story telling; of joy and sorrow, torment and triumph, expressed tangibly in the making of a building'. To celebrate fourteen glorious years of film-making, 100 editions of Grand Designs Magazine, 100 separate programmes and ten years of hosting the Stirling Prize, Kevin now delves into the archives to highlight his favourite projects. The Best of Grand Designs charts where domestic architecture has come from, and is moving to, in the first decade or so of a new millennium. And it places people at the centre of the stories of these buildings. Each project is supported by beautiful photography, building plans and Kevin's own personal analysis, together with commentary from his long-time collaborator, Isabel Allen. From the off-grid ecological approach of woodsman Ben Law in Sussex to the quirky experimentalism of Sarah Wigglesworth and Jeremy Till's straw bale house in London, Kevin demonstrates how Grand Designs continues to contribute to television history and why it provides an important legacy for good house design.

Lorenzo Lotto: Rediscovered Master of the Renaissance Free ShippingFrom $79.45
Hailed as the greatest Venetian painter after Titian, Lorenzo Lotto (c. 1480-1556) is known for a delightfully idiosyncratic artistic vision that has had special appeal for twentieth-century sensibilities. This book — which discusses Lotto's life and work — explores the way his formal and iconographic experiments set him apart from the mainstream culture of his time. The volume describes and reproduces paintings in most of the genres in which Lotto worked, including devotional paintings, altarpieces, portraits, and mythologies. These are arranged in chronological order from his beginnings as a pupil of Giovanni Bellini through the brilliant work of his maturity on which his reputation was based, to the end of his career in a religious community on the Adriatic coast. Focusing on his autograph paintings, the book presents such masterpieces as Saint Jerome in the Wilderness and Portrait of Andrea Odoni. The authors — David Alan Brown, Peter Humfrey, Mauro Lucco, and other eminent scholars — draw on a large number of original documents, including Lotto's will, his letters to a confraternity in Bergamo, and his meticulously kept account books. They discuss not only Lotto's biography and inspiration but also his mastery of allegory, his possible sympathy with the Protestant Reformation, the patrons of his altarpieces, and the so-called Lotto carpets. This beautiful book is the catalogue for an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., that will run from 2 November 1997 to 1 March 1998.
Allan Ramsay: A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings Free ShippingFrom $133.54
This is the first complete catalogue of oil paintings by Allan Ramsay (1713-84), whose career spanned the period in which British art established a national identity. Ramsay was a well-educated Scotsman familiar with contemporary Italian and French portraiture, and his mature portraits, with their delicate coloring and subtle characterization, provide a most elegant episode in the history of British art.<p>More than six hundred portraits are catalogued in detail. Each is illustrated in black and white in a chronological sequence indicating, with the forty-eight color plates and selected relevant drawings, the full range of Ramsay's art. There is an introductory essay and biographical summary, a chronological list of portraits, statistical surveys of Ramsay's production and prices, and indexes of engravers and of sales.
Breaking Down the Barriers: Art in the 1990s Free ShippingFrom $41.71
The third part of a four-volume set of art criticism by Richard Cork, written over a 30-year period. It offers a chronicle of a turbulent period as well as an overview and survey of British art and its reception at this time. This particular work addresses the art of the 1990s. Against the odds, artists emerged from the economic blight of the early 1990s with a determination to achieve renewal, but there was a marked absence of optimism. The excitement centred on the energy of artists, while their work often grew dark and intensely sceptical, concerned with isolation, fragmentation, dislocation and frustration. Far from wallowing in morbidity, however, the new generation was resilient. This sense of defiance contributed to the surprisingly wide appeal of their work, and turned "enfants terribles" like Damien Hirst or Tracey Emin into celebrities. A strong sense of momentum was established, building in particular on possibilities opened up in the 1970s. By the time the controversial "Sensation" went on an international tour in the late 1990s, turnstile figures far outstripped expectations. Richard Cork was continually challenged and invigorated by this continuing spirit of audacity.Territorial limits were pushed out, shibboleths flouted and definitions of art widened. London became an exciting place to work, but there were plenty of other continental centres where contemporary art could thrive. Young artists from the USA and Europe held outstanding solo shows in London, while potent work came also from Canada, Mexico and Chicano Arts on the US border. Young black artists born in England also made powerful contributions. Moreover, increasing attention was paid to developments in Africa, China and Japan, ensuring that notions of contemporary art were not bounded by familiar Western limits. As a co-selector of the 1995 British Art Show, which attracted record-breaking numbers of visitors, Cork became actively involved with the new generation. His int
