George Lucas by James ClarkeFrom $1.95
The Pocket Essentials Series is a dynamic series of books that are concise, lively, and easy to read. Packed with facts as well as expert opinions, each book has all the key information you need to know about such popular topics as film, television, cult fiction, history, and more. This Pocket Essential explores how the films George Lucas has directed operate and how they connect together. Whether its the comedy of American Graffiti, the machinations of The Phantom Menace, or the oppression of THX 1138, Lucas films celebrate the power of the maverick sensibility. It is a sensibility for which Lucas has become a pop culture icon not just in the kinds of stories he tells but in his approach to the medium of movie-making. The book covers the landmark movies - from student movies to Indiana Jones and Star Wars - and also looks at Lucas achievements beyond his work as a director with his creation of Industrial Light and Magic, Skywalker Ranch, and other media ventures, particularly his advocation and development of digital cinema.
Oliver Stone by Michael CarlsonFrom $1.95
The Pocket Essentials Series is a dynamic series of books that are concise, lively, and easy to read. Packed with facts as well as expert opinions, each book has all the key information you need to know about such popular topics as film, television, cult fiction, history, and more. Oliver Stone is one of the most controversial, yet most honoured, filmmakers of our time. Is he the conscience of Hollywood, or is he a pretentious opportunist cashing in on false liberalism? Do his films break new technical ground artistically, or is he just a hack trying to use tricks to cover up weak points in his stories? Stone appears to court controversy, yet in many ways has been a very traditional Hollywood filmmaker, working within the system. This Pocket Essential explores all these questions, reviewing and analysing each of Stone's movies, going behind the scenes to examine the arguments his movies have raised, and adding some thought-provoking insights to the world of modern cinema's most infamous son.
Steven Soderbergh by Jason WoodFrom $2.5
The Pocket Essentials Series is a dynamic series of books that are concise, lively, and easy to read. Packed with facts as well as expert opinions, each book has all the key information you need to know about such popular topics as film, television, cult fiction, history, and more. Steven Soderbergh burst onto the independent scene with his provocative, multi-award winning feature debut Sex, Lies and Videotape in 1989. Soderbergh continued to plough his own furrow, producing numerous successful films along the way, such as Out of Sight, Erin Brokovich, and Ocean's Eleven. As well as having an introductory essay, in this book each of Soderbergh's films is reviewed and analysed. There's a handy reference section listing all the Soderbergh related publications, and a full filmography, including Soderbergh's tireless work as a producer and cameraman.
Sibusiso Mbhele and His Fish Helicopter by Koto BolofoFrom $4.95
Sibusiso Mbhele and His Fish Helicopter is a cinematic look at the life and work of a visionary South African outsider artist who sparked the jealousy, wrath, and ultimate rejection of his own community with his wondrous creations of scrap metal flying machines. Based on his eponymous film, originally screened in 2000 at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Koto Bolofo's first monograph documents a young, talented South African sculptor forced to flee his rural home a full-sized, hand-built metal facsimile of a helicopter which stood as an oddity against a background of traditional thatched huts in his African village. Self-taught, Mbhele earned his living creating scrap metal sculptures of planes, cars, and bicycles from wire, car wrecks, oil tin drums, and other recycled materials. After making the headlines in the local newspapers, Mbhele's neighbours, jealous of his recognition and success, destroyed his creations and his beloved helicopter home. They had him jailed, and though he was later released, the tension and threat of further trouble was enough to make Mbhele take flight from his precious helicopter haven and head for the security of the city and the unknown.
Mike Hodges by Mark AdamsFrom $1.95
The Pocket Essentials Series is a dynamic series of books that are concise, lively, and easy to read. Packed with facts as well as expert opinions, each book has all the key information you need to know about such popular topics as film, television, cult fiction, history, and more. Who is Mike Hodges? One of the great maverick British film-makers. A director who is uncompromising and willing to fight his corner, he has made films over the last three decades that mark him out as a rare and unusual talent. He is a difficult film-maker to define. His work includes crime drama (Get Carter, Croupier and Pulp), science-fiction (Flash Gordon and The Terminal Man) and even comedy (Morons from Outer Space), but he has also made watchable oddities such as A Prayer for the Dying (Mickey Rourke courting controversy as an IRA killer seeking redemption) and Black Rainbow (a surreal fantasy drama little seen, but much acclaimed). He started his career in television in the 1960s, but hit the blg screen with the violent crime drama Get Carter, a film that has now achieved cult status (recently voted the best British film ever in Hotdog magazine) and continues to be the benchmark any British crime film sets itself against. Though hardly prolific- just eight feature films in 30 years - Mike Hodges makes fascinating movies that just won't go away. What is in it? As well as an introductory essay, each of Hodges film and television work is reviewed and analysed. There is also an article looking at the impact and continuing influence of Get Carter and a section listing any other information about Hodges and his films.
Beastie Boys by Richard LuckFrom $1.95

From swilling beer and swiping VW badges to universal respect and hanging out with the Dalai Lama, no one has taken a musical journey to rival that of the Beastie Boys. MCA, Mike D, and Ad-Rock are assured a place in rock's pantheon, and yet still they divide their time between saving the world and creating incredible records like Licensed To Ill, Ill Communication and Check Your Head. This Pocket Essential reviews each of the act's albums and features exclusive interviews with friends and collaborators. The book also details the band's birth, their transformation from hard-core punks to break beat kings, and controversies ranging from the outrageous stage shows of their early days to their clashes with everyone from The Prodigy to The People's Republic of China.
