Squeak Carnwath by Karen TsujimotoFrom $16.5
The paintings of Squeak Carnwath, often subtly illuminated by meticulously applied layers of glaze, embody complex layers of meaning. "Paintings are not ordinary objects," the artist observes. "Painting is a carrier of meaning, of human touch. Each brush stroke or smear of pigment is freighted with philosophical inquiry." In Carnwath's works, rows of writing are placed to slow the eye, "to put the viewer in real time." Recurring motifs touch on personal and universal themes, from a rabbit tentatively seeking its place in a chaotic world to the seated blue Medicine Buddha, healer of ills and reminder of the latent Buddha nature in each of us. Published in conjunction with the exhibition organised by the Oakland Museum of California, Squeak Carnwath: Painting Is No Ordinary Object celebrates the wonder and spirit embodied in each of Carnwath's works. Over eighty full-colour reproductions trace the development of the artist's distinctive style from the 1970s to the present, while essays by curator Karen Tsujimoto and art critic John Yau explore the personal, social, and artistic context of this powerful body of work. About the Artist Squeak Carnwath is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and an Individual Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Carnwath received her MFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1977 and has taught at the University of California since 1982. Carnwath maintains a studio in Oakland, California, where she has lived and worked since 1970.

George Frideric Handel by Ellen T. HarrisFrom $42.75
During his lifetime, the sounds of Handel's music reached from court to theater, echoed in cathedrals, and filled crowded taverns, but the man himself-known to most as the composer of Messiah-is a bit of a mystery. Though he took meticulous care of his musical manuscripts and even provided for their preservation on his death, very little of an intimate nature survives. One document-Handel's will-offers us a narrow window into his personal life. In it, he remembers not only family and close colleagues but also neighborhood friends. In search of the private man behind the public figure, Ellen T. Harris has spent years tracking down the letters, diaries, personal accounts, legal cases, and other documents connected to these bequests. The result is a tightly woven tapestry of London in the first half of the eighteenth century, one that interlaces vibrant descriptions of Handel's music with stories of loyalty, cunning, and betrayal. With this wholly new approach, Harris has achieved something greater than biography. Layering the interconnecting stories of Handel's friends like the subjects and countersubjects of a fugue, Harris introduces us to an ambitious, shrewd, generous, brilliant, and flawed man, hiding in full view behind his public persona.
The Rovers Return : The Official Coronation Street Companion by Tim RandallFrom $33.95
Coronation Street is the world's longest-running TV soap-opera and a hugely popular national institution. From the moment the very first episode flickered onto our screens on 9 December 1960, the very heart of the show has always been the Rovers Return public house. It may just be a backstreet boozer, but TV's most famous pub has been at the centre of the action, week in week out, for the last 53 years. As longest-serving barmaid Betty once sagely noted: 'If you're not being talked about in this pub, you're not worth serving', and under the watchful eye of legendary landladies such as Annie Walker, Bet Lynch and Liz McDonald, the Rovers has witnessed everything from births, deaths, brawls and break-ups, to weddings, wakes and even its own ghost. But despite any drama that may be about to unfold, regulars are guaranteed a warm welcome, a shoulder to cry on and more often than not the waft of a hearty hotpot seeping through from the kitchen out back. This year proved to be the Rovers' most explosive to date when the pub was ripped apart by a devastating blaze, rocking the lives of the residents forever. As the boozer was gradually restored to its former glory, it hit home to the regulars just how much the heart of their community really meant to them... Including previously unpublished photography and exclusive access to the Coronation Street archives, The Rovers Return : The Official Coronation Street Companion celebrates over five decades of tears and laughter inside Weatherfield's iconic watering hole. It's the book no fan would want to be without.About the Author With an inquisitiveness second only to Norris Cole, Tim Randall became a journalist, writing about television and interviewing some of TV's most familiar faces for newspaper supplements and magazines. A British TV buff, his recent books include the bestselling F
