Squeak Carnwath by Karen TsujimotoFrom $12.5
The paintings of Squeak Carnwath, often subtly illuminated by meticulously applied layers of glaze, embody complex layers of meaning. "Paintings are not ordinary objects," the artist observes. "Painting is a carrier of meaning, of human touch. Each brush stroke or smear of pigment is freighted with philosophical inquiry." In Carnwath's works, rows of writing are placed to slow the eye, "to put the viewer in real time." Recurring motifs touch on personal and universal themes, from a rabbit tentatively seeking its place in a chaotic world to the seated blue Medicine Buddha, healer of ills and reminder of the latent Buddha nature in each of us. Published in conjunction with the exhibition organised by the Oakland Museum of California, Squeak Carnwath: Painting Is No Ordinary Object celebrates the wonder and spirit embodied in each of Carnwath's works. Over eighty full-colour reproductions trace the development of the artist's distinctive style from the 1970s to the present, while essays by curator Karen Tsujimoto and art critic John Yau explore the personal, social, and artistic context of this powerful body of work. About the Artist Squeak Carnwath is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and an Individual Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Carnwath received her MFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1977 and has taught at the University of California since 1982. Carnwath maintains a studio in Oakland, California, where she has lived and worked since 1970.

Author Blue Carreon would ask his subjects to answer a fill-in-the-blanks type of questionnaire on topics that touch on many different aspects of our lives--from personal rituals to alternative careers to thoughts on Botox. Discover the fascinating truth on who has resisted and succumbed to Botox, and those who wouldn't admit to using it by their twist of words or vague replies. Carreon went on to ask a great mix of personalities to be part of the Conversations series. Among these include the style icons Ines de la Fressange and Olivia Chantecaille; fashion designers Diane von Furstenberg, Rachel Roy, and Michael Bastian; decorators Charlotte Moss, Vicente Wolf, and Mary McDonald; and artists James Nares and Polly Apfelbaum. Through sixty selected interviews, Conversations stretches over the fields of fashion, interior design, and art. Delve into the fascinating lives of some of the world's most creative minds and see just how many turns of phrase can be added to a single open-ended word like "Happiness..." Read their answers and you'll be surprised at how the subjects jump so quickly from clever to funny to philosophical--or all of the above--with each question. About the Author Blue Carreon has been working as a lifestyle journalist and fashion editor for the past ten-plus years. He previously worked as the fashion editor for the Philippines and Hong Kong Tatler. He also launched the Singapore edition of the Italian magazine Amica. Cape Cod Modern by Peter McMahonFrom $54.5
In the summer of 1937, Walter Gropius rented a house on Planting Island, near the base of Cape Cod. There, he and his wife, Ise, hosted a festive reunion of Bauhaus masters and students who had recently emigrated from Europe: Marcel Breuer, Herbert Bayer, L?szl? Moholy-Nagy, Xanti Schawinsky and others. Several members returned to travel farther up the peninsula, rent cabins, buy land and design their ideal summer homes. Thus began a chapter in the history of modern architecture that has never been told ? until now. The flow of talent onto the Outer Cape continued and, within a few years, the area was a hotbed of intellectual currents from New York, Boston, Cambridge and the country?s top schools of architecture and design. Avant-garde homes began to appear in the woods and on the dunes; by the 1970s, there were about 100 modern houses of interest here. In this story, we meet, among others, the Boston Brahmins Jack Phillips and Nathaniel Saltonstall; the self-taught architect, carpenter and painter Jack Hall; the Finn Olav Hammarstr?m, who had worked for Alvar Aalto; and the prolific Charlie Zehnder, who brought the lessons of both Frank Lloyd Wright and Brutalism to the Cape. Initially, these designers had no clients; they built for themselves and their families, or for friends sympathetic to their ideals. Their homes were laboratories, places to work through ideas without spending much money. The result of this ferment is a body of work unlike any other, a regional modernism fusing the building traditions of Cape Cod fishing towns with Bauhaus concepts and postwar experimentation.About the Author Christine Cipriani has written about architecture, design, and culture for Dwell, Architectural Record, ArchitectureBoston, Modernism, and other publications. Previously, she edited nonfiction at book publishers including Beacon Press and Penguin India. She has vacatio
