Focus - Letters by Nicole McConvilleFrom $2.75
Whether they're glowing from a neon sign or scrawled as graffiti on the wall, letters are both meaningful and beautiful. They also seem to pop up where you least expect it. On a bicycle wheel that looks like an "O" or wooden boards that form an "E." With approximately 250 images taken by amateur photographers, Focus - Letters shines a spotlight on the infinity of ways letters decorate our world, proving that sometimes the vehicle can be even more interesting than the message itself.
Rock Chicks : The Hottest Female Rockers from the 1960s to Now by Alison Stieven-TaylorFrom $4.75
With profiles on hottest rock 'n' roll women spanning from the 1960s to current times, this book has everything there is to know about the most rockin' chicks in history from Janis Joplin and Suzi Quatro to Courtney Love and Pink. With perceptive biographies and in-depth music critiques, this is an up-close and personal look at the experiences, adventures, and musical passions of these extraordinary and talented women whose wild vocals and on-stage antics have made them rock 'n' roll legends. Through personal heartaches, drug addictions, public humiliations, and private nightmares, these rock chicks have risen to take the music world by storm often facing great personal adversity, pressure, and scrutiny that would have destroyed mere mortal's souls. From Madonna spending years living in squats in New York before going on to sell 250 million records, to Tina Turner surviving the brutal bashings of her husband and then going on stage to perform with broken ribs and contusions all of these women overcame great obstacles to make some of the most memorable music the world of rock has heard. Their inspiring and entertaining stories, compiled here in this profusely illustrated and thoroughly researched book, make for an adrenaline pumping and compellingly memorable ride through rock 'n' roll history.
Bangladesh Cinema and National Identity by Zakir Hossain RajuFrom $262.5
This book analyses the relationship between cinema and modernity in Bangladesh. It investigates the roles of a non-western 'national' film industry in Asia in constructing nationhood and identity within colonial and postcolonial predicaments. The political and economic forces and the cultural institutions that have been active in shaping Bangladesh cinema are presented. The author explores how the conflict among different social groups turned Bangladesh cinema into a site of contesting identities during the twentieth century and beyond. In particular, he illustrates the connections between film production and reception in Bangladesh and a variety of nationalist constructions of Bengali Muslim identity. Drawing on the idea of cinema as public sphere and the postcolonial notion of formation of the 'Bangladesh' nation, interactions between cinema and middle-class Bengali Muslims in different social and political matrices are analysed. It is then argued that the development of western-educated Bengali-Muslim middle classes and their search for a distinct cultural identity affected the development of cinema as a cultural institution in postcolonial East Pakistan and Bangladesh. This book, the first major academic study on this large and vibrant national cinema, demonstrates that Bangladesh national cinema worked as different 'public spheres' for different 'publics' throughout the twentieth century. It fills a gap in Global Film and Media Studies as well as in South Asian Studies.
Jimi Hendrix by David StubbsFrom $21.25
Jimi Hendrix was very probably the greatest solo rock artist of all time. He was the supreme physical and musical emblem of rock music. If anyone personified the genre in its purest, most potent and inflammatory form, it was Hendrix. He was unparalleled as a sonic sculptor of fretboard electricity. With a deceptively theatrical sexuality, he wrought a molten and massive body of sound, which left his contemporaries sounding small, monochrome and tinny by comparison, a body of sound which is still awe-inspiring today.
Art in Nature by David RennieFrom $125.25
Each year, photographers from around the world are invited to enter the Australian Geographic ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year competition. (ANZANG refers to the Australia-New Zealand-Antarctica-New Guinea bioregion.) Last year, 2013, David Rennie won it. His achievement was made all the more remarkable by the fact that David Rennie?s love affair with photography only began in 2007 at the age of 47. In this magnificent book, David has included just a taste of the strikingly memorable images that now comprise his vast collection. Most are taken at the Mandurah Wetlands, south of Perth. Encompassing over 26,000 hectares, these wetlands are home to over 140 species of bird, with many migrating every year from as far away as Russia. The result is a book that will captivate not just bird lovers but all who appreciate the art we find in nature.About the Author David Rennie is a late-blooming, self-taught photographer. He jokes that when he started out he thought ISO was a measurement for radioactive materials, photoshop a place where you bought camera gear, and shutter speed an indication of how fast your venetian blinds closed! Today, just six years after his love affair with photography began, he is a highly acclaimed, award-winning nature photographer, with a career that culminated in 2013 with him being crowned Australian Geographic ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year. David credits his bipolar disorder with helping him refine his photographic skills. During his manic phases, sleep would evade him for days - and it was during those times that he would spend days at a time watching his subjects and learning their ways, developing new techniques so that he could capture his breathtaking images. He now uses his photography to assist him in his work as a passionate advocate for conserving our wilderness areas, especially our valuable wetlands that are increasingly

From the world's first feature film in 1906 to the world's first feature documentaries shot between 1895 and 1901, Australia has always done great things in film. Not only did Australia give birth to film but also to some of the biggest stars of the twentieth century. In the 1980s and 1990s we saw the first low budget films that billed: Mel Gibson, Russell Crow, Nicole Kidman, Guy Pearce, Cate Blanchett, Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana and Geoffrey Rush. We pushed the barriers of sexuality in film with naked Elle MacPherson in "Sirens" and Nicole Kidman in "Moulin Rouge". Documenting the history of Australia and in some cases the world, with startling films known for their realism and simple artistry; war time legends take place in Changi and Kokoda Front Line to name a few. Location films such as "They're a Weird Mob" and "A Town Like Alice" showed Australian landscapes to the rest of the world. And in recent times contemporary films such as "Pitch Black", "Lantana", "Chopper" and "Two Hands" have made it internationally. 1970s horror and sci-fi did its worst in films like "Picnic at Hanging Rock".We explore the horror of Nicole Kidman's first film and the insanity of Mel Gibson's "Romper Stomper". The first of its kind as was "The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert". With directors such as Baz Luhrman and actors such as Geoffrey Rush, Australian cinema has become a whole lot more artistic and risque. Although often undervalued in a multi-billion dollar internat

Led Zeppelin FAQ by George CaseFrom $27.75
In this exhaustive and insightful reference text, rock writer and cultural critic George Case details the key names, dates, figures, and features of one of the biggest and most mythologised rock-and-roll groups of all time: Led Zeppelin. Here, finally, are the answers to the puzzles that have haunted fans for over four decades puzzles such as the meaning of Led Zep's enigmatic album covers; the truth about leader Jimmy Page's involvement with the occult; a breakdown of the sometimes murky roots of their greatest songs; firm data on their musical instruments, live performances, and studio productions; and sordid specifics of the band's infamously debauched private lives. But here, too, is a deeply reflective analysis of why Led Zeppelin's music has endured as long as it has, and of how Led Zeppelin's mystique has only grown in the years since their official disbanding. Placing the group in the context of their time and place, Case scrupulously compares and contrasts their achievements with those of their influences, rivals, and followers. Led Zeppelin FAQ is not only an indispensable listener's companion to a classic rock act, but a considered history of rock and roll as a business, an art form, and a worldwide social phenomenon.
Cabins by Philip JodidioFrom $73.95
Life in the woods: Creative cabin architecture. Ever since Henry David Thoreau's described his two years, two months, and two days of cabin existence at Walden Pond, Massachusetts in Walden, or, Life in the Woods (1854), the idea of a refuge dwelling has seduced the modern psyche. In the past decade, as our material existence and environmental footprint has grown exponentially, architects around the globe have become particularly interested in the possibilities of the minimal, low-impact, and isolated abode.

This TASCHEN title, combining insightful text, rich photography and bright, contemporary illustrations by Marie-Laure Cruschi, explores how this particular architectural type presents special opportunities for creative thinking. In eschewing excess, the cabin limits actual spatial intrusion to the bare essentials of living requirements, while in responding to its typically rustic setting, it foregrounds eco-friendly solutions. As such, the cabin comes to showcase some of the most inventive and forward-looking practice of contemporary architecture, with Renzo Piano, Terunobu Fujimori, Tom Kundig and many fresh young professionals all embracing such distilled sanctuary spaces.
The cabins selected for this publication emphasize the variety of the genre, both in terms of usage and geography. From an artist studio on the Suffolk coast in England to eco-home huts in the Western Ghats region of India, this survey is as exciting in its international reach as it is in its array of briefs, clients, and situations. Constant throughout, however, is architectural innovation, and an inspiring sense of contemplation and coexistence as people return to nature and to a less destructive model of being in the world.About the AuthorPhilip Jodidio (born 1954) studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for ove
