Tine Tillers

A tiller helps in ground preparation for planting, cultivating growing crop and cultivation between garden rows. After harvest, a tiller mulches refuse onto the soil, thus nourishing it. Tillers can be used in both small and large farms. Multi-use tillers can also double up as snowplows in winter.

Types of tine tillers

There are two tiller models in the market, front and rear-tined.

Front-tines are powered by an engine, which pulls the tiller, so the user need not push it.

Rear-tines are more suited for large areas than the small home gardens, so they are found in larger units.

Mini-tillers are ideal for small home gardens. They are lighter on the pocket, easy to carry and store. Electric mini-tillers are smaller still and can be used in flower gardens around the house.

Features to note in tine tillers

Many tiller models are equipped with both reverse and forward drives, so a deadman control is a good safety device on models with reverse drive.

Though tines come in a variety of designs, the most common are the ones which have their cutting edge slanted upward, so it strikes the soil at an angle, slicing into the soil, thus decreasing weed entanglement.

With higher-horsepower motors, the user can till at slower speeds without blocking the engine, and this is useful when the going is rough.
