Buying a great television is easy in this day and age. There are so many wonderful televisions from which to choose. The challenge lies in picking the television that will best meet your individual television viewing needs.

There is new technology available that is sure to distract you. Don't get sidetracked from your efforts to find a great television. Decide what your primary purpose for the television is and then find a TV that will meet your needs with flying colours.

Family Television Viewing

If you're television watching time is all about keeping the family happy then you're going to want a television that is going to be sturdy enough to handle a fair amount of abuse, arguing over channels, fast flipping, and the old on again and off again run around.

In other words, durability is going to be your primary concern. There are many different models available with fancy bells and whistles, but your primary concerns are going to be quality picture and sound along with a lengthy lifespan (preferably until the children are out of the house and you control the remote control once again).

Home Theatre and/or Watching Movies

If you're all about the latest flick to hit the video stands or come out on DVD then you're going to be more interested in a television that has the best bells and whistles available. In fact, you might be best suited for one of the 3D televisions on the market – especially if you're a true fan of the 3-dimensional style of movies.

Home theatres do not require a 3D television however to be a good place to watch movies. In fact, the OLED and LED televisions on the market now are all impressive for the colour quality and picture clarity they provide. Make sure you don't overlook their potential for excellent televisions now and in the future.

Plasma televisions are also excellent choices for home theatres and inexpensive enough, in general, that you can get a larger sized television for a lower price. If money is a concern then this may be the best route to take.

Video Game Play

Some people out there prefer using their televisions as means of accessing the latest blockbuster video game to hit the market. As games become more and more advanced televisions are working harder than ever to keep up.

The one thing you absolutely do not want to invest in if you plan to do a lot of video game play on your new television is a plasma TV. The problems of the past with ghosting aren't as pronounced and prevalent in the more recent models but it's still enough of a complaint that gamers are better served by staying away – lest they succumb to drastic measures such as throwing game controllers into the television screen. It does happen.

Once you decide the best television type to meet your needs then the primary concern is figuring out which television offers the best picture and price for your use. Then you've found the perfect television!
