If you haven't set out to buy a television in the last decade or so, things have changed a bit. In fact, there are many words floating around the television marketing that can be a bit confusing.

You'll see all kinds of new words and phrases floating around. Some of them may seem truly baffling in the beginning. If you take your time though and learn the vocabulary before you buy you'll have a much better time figuring out the right television type to suit your viewing needs.

Before you buy, it's a good idea to take a minute to find out just what you need and which television type is best suited to meet those needs. Each one has its very own set of pros and cons to keep in mind so study up and you will have no problem finding the perfect fit for you and your family.

Plasma Televisions – What's Their Story?

Plasma televisions were once all the rage in the world of televisions. When they first appeared on the market, they shocked and awed the world who watched. They created stunning pictures with bright colours the likes of which had never been seen before on televisions.

For many it was like going from black and white motion pictures in 1939 to the Technicolor world of Oz in the Wizard of Oz. The difference in picture was that dramatic.

Plasma televisions, however, were not without their share of problems. One of the biggest problems was the fact that these televisions have an issue known as "ghosting". This is where one image, or shadow of an image, to be more specific, is superimposed on subsequent images.

It interrupts the flow of television shows, movies, or video games played on the television and can be extremely frustrating. Newer plasma television models have made great strides in addressing the issue though there are still complaints made frequently enough that it does bear mentioning.

The upside of these televisions though is that they offer a stunning picture, are environmentally friendly products, and they cost considerably less than comparably sized LCD and LED models of televisions.

If you are interested in a nice family television that isn't going to break your budget, you can get a bigger television for less money if you choose to buy a plasma television – in general.

LCD Televisions – Are They Making the Grade?

LCD televisions have been around for a few years and are only showing signs of getting better. They are, in levels of quality of images, a little lower on the totem pole than the plasma and LED televisions.

That doesn't mean that they don't have beautiful pictures. It just means that they aren't quite as beautiful. The lighting simply isn't as dramatic in these televisions.

However, they do not suffer from the ghosting or "burn out" problems that have plagued plasma televisions. This is good news for anyone who is an avid video gamer and has been the preferred television of gamers around the world until the LED televisions hit the market not too long ago.

Another potential problem exists for sports lovers who feel the need for speed. A problem with some LCD televisions prevents them from handling fast motion very well. This is problematic for race fans who want a clear picture of what is happening on the track.

In addition, if you're not looking at the television from the proper angle, the images on the screen may dim.

The other problem to keep in mind is the expense. While prices have fallen drastically since the introduction of LED and 3D televisions these televisions still cost quite a bit more than plasma televisions of the same size.

LED Televisions – The Good, the Better, and the Beautiful

Among the modern options LED televisions in many ways are the best and the brightest. They have an amazing quality picture. The technology is up to the task of whatever seems to be going on – on the screen.

One of the popular ways to use LED televisions currently is to stream videos. Many of them offer onboard Internet access or the ability to load videos through USB devices. This gives viewers an even wider range of options for using their televisions than ever before.

You can use LED TVs to present slide shows. You have the option of connecting your computer to the television wirelessly or through a VGA connection. All current gaming systems work with LED televisions provided there are abundant HDMI outputs and connections of course and you can enjoy stunningly beautiful Blu-ray movies if you have a Blu-ray player connected either to your LED television or on board.

The most beautiful thing about LED televisions though isn't the picture on the screen. It's the picture for the planet. These devices are generally the most eco-friendly among consumers. There is even an Organic or OLED television made by Sony that takes its environmentally friendly design one step further.

The one drawback when considering the LED television is the price tag. Of the models mentioned here, it is the newest and the costliest – upfront. However, with a monthly energy savings of 20 to 30 percent power consumption over other television models it won't take long to make up the difference.

There you have the scoop when it comes to plasma, LED, and LCD television models. Which one is the best for you?
