Keeping your printer in good working order doesn’t take a lot of work. In fact, it’s quite easy when you know the latest printer care tricks and tips that will help you keep your printer nozzles free of jams, printing sharper and more vivid pictures.

Being the workhorses computing, printers are usually ignored - until they run out of ink, of course. That’s when it’s time to rush over and replace those tanks as speedily and as inexpensively as possible. No one spares a few moments to think about those poor overworked devices for the next few months. Till next time, Mr.Printer!

When they go into complete failure from years of neglect, they’re replaced just like monitors. Is your printer older than 6 years?

This article aims to show you all the easy tricks that can prolong your printer’s life by years.

Use A Humidifier To Avoid Clogs

One of the unpleasant facts in life about using inkjet printers is that nozzles will clog at some point or the other. Anecdotes gathered from PCMag.com and research from other reputable websites show that printer nozzles face a greater chance of clogging if you live in low-humidity areas.

If you live in such an area and facing clogged nozzle issues, try introducing a humidifier into your printer room. If you’re not in a low-humidity climate, but still facing problems, you’ll unfortunately need to replace the cartridge. After that, prevent clogging by making sure that the printer does not go for too long without using it.

Cut Down On Bloat-Ware

Certain printers, especially the all-in-one styles, have a lot of pre-installed software that you probably either won’t be using or don’t want. They could be anything from utility software that checks up automatically on driver updates, to graphic editing programs you already have on your computer.

To reduce all useless software, look for the ‘Custom’ choice when installing your next printer, instead of choosing ‘Recommended’ or ‘Typical’ options. This allows you to install only those software that you actually want to have.

Minimal choices in such cases should still include the driver software itself. Sometimes, you can also download a file from the product manufacturer’s site for minimal installation. This lets you forget about the CD altogether.

Fix Smeared Print-Outs

If you see pages that are smearing when using an inkjet printer, this is usually due to something or other being stuck on the printer head. If there are nozzles in your printer’s cartridge, like most of the HP printers nowadays, smearing occurs almost immediately after changing a cartridge. In this case, take out the cartridge and double check it for complete removal of protective tapes over nozzles. If even a bit of that tape is left being, clear it out. Be careful to not touch nozzle plate while doing this.

Raise Quality By Using The Correct Paper Settings

This is probably the most common grounds for complaint about quality with inkjet printers. It usually happens when your driver is adjusted for the wrong kind of paper. Every type of paper needs a different amount of ink and ink colour proportion for production of the perfect final colour.

When you set the paper, you tell the driver the colour tables it should be using. Certain inkjets can recognize which paper type is inserted instantly. However, this feature isn’t 100% reliable. Therefore, if results are not as you expected, make sure you try manually setting your driver for the paper type in your printer before giving up all hope.

Stick to these four top printing tips and tricks explained above and your relationship with your printer is sure to be a long-term one.
