We Put These Vacuums to the Test

Do you have children? How about pets? Do you lead an active life style? Do you find your home in need of vacuuming on a nearly constant level? You're not alone.

Do you have children? How about pets? Do you lead an active life style? Do you find your home in need of vacuuming on a nearly constant level? You're not alone. I don't know about your house. But in the past, my house has gone through vacuum cleaners like nobody’s business. We have three girls, two guys, and one long-haired dog that sheds a lot.

We do all kinds of kids' sports and spend a great deal of time in the great outdoors. Unfortunately, a lot of the outdoors comes back inside with us and deposits itself right on our floors. This means that any vacuum cleaner coming into our home needs to be up for the challenge.

The Old Way of Doing Things

In the past, I'd burn through belts and blow out motors at the drop of a hat. My hair, my daughters' hair or even the dog's hair would get caught up in it and cause motors to burn out or belts to break. All that hair also played havoc with the rolling brushes on the bottom of the vacuum cleaners we went through during this time.

If that wasn't enough, I constantly needed to change bags and clean out hoses because hair balled up, bunched up and blocked up the hoses so that the vacuum was always losing suction. It drove me crazy.

I bought every cheap vacuum on the market convinced that they were all the same. I believed that if I was going to burn through the motors in six or so months there was no point in investing one penny more than I had to.

A New Dawn In the Life of Vacuums

Then I came across an advertisement for Dyson vacuums that promised to never lose suction a few years ago. I listened as he talked about the science behind the vacuum and how he was an inventor – a problem solver – and not a vacuum industry insider.

This vacuum promised something new and different that others weren't offering. Then I went out and searched for a Dyson in the store only to be stopped in my tracks. It was an instant shot of cold water on my system. If I had a hard time paying as little as possible for vacuums there was no way I was going to make this kind of investment on a vacuum cleaner that hadn't even been around (at that point in time) long enough to know if it was going to last.

It ended that dream for me – for the time being. A few years went by and I kept hearing great things about the Dyson brand and specifically about the cyclonic technology of the vacuums. That's when I decided that if I couldn't afford the price of a Dyson, there had to be another brand that offered this technology at an affordable price.

Today, there are several vacuums on the market that offer the same cleaning power of a Dyson at half the cost.

One of those is the one I'm using in my home today and have been for quite a while. It's the first time in my life I've ever been excited about a vacuum to. It has definitely outlived every single one of my former investments in vacuums.

For instance, we've been living in our current home for five years now. My Shark Navigator Lift-Away Vacuum Cleaner is my fifth vacuum. I've really tried them all (well most of the ones in the lower price bracket – that's for certain).

I have been disappointed, let down, and felt run down by so many vacuum cleaners in the past that I almost decided to pass on this one and go with my general modus operandi. But, at the last minute I took a deep breath and leapt.

It was a leap of faith to be sure. I had no guarantees that this model was going to work better than all the others that had failed me in the past. I am so glad that I did take that leap as I finally have a vacuum that grabs the mess off my dirty floors and is super easy to care for.

I have provided in home field tests of all sorts of vacuum cleaners: canister vacuums, upright vacuums, stick vacuums and even shop vacuums. My Shark Navigator Lift-Away has changed the way I view and see vacuum cleaners forever. I've discovered just how much value and extra free time owning the right vacuum for your home can provide.

If you're in the market for your next vacuum, there are some excellent brands and bargains you'll definitely want to learn more about. The best thing you can do is figure out which vacuum will be the best one for you instead of basing your buying decision on the one that works best for me.

Take your time, figure out what you want and need from your vacuum cleaner and establish a budget you can live with. If you do all these things you'll have the perfect vacuum for your current situation before you know it.
