Home internet is an unavoidable monthly cost; however, there are ways to keep your spending down if you’re savvy and willing to shop around.

While $80 per month may seem like a lot, it’s actually a pretty average price for NBN in 2026. There are certainly plans that cost less, but you generally won’t get faster speeds than NBN 50 – or 50Mbps – unless you’re willing to pay $80 or more per month.

If you can afford $80 per month (or $960 per year), there are options for NBN 50 plans, NBN 100 plans, and even a few NBN 500 plans. While there are quite a few providers to choose from, we’ve assessed the top options from reputable ISPs and put together a selection of the top plans that, on average, cost less than $80 per month for the first year.

If $80 a month is too much of a stretch, we also have guides on the best NBN plans under $60 and under $70 per month, where we outline the best value picks.

Cheapest NBN plan under $80

Dodo NBN 500 Plan | $61p/m (for the first 6 months, then $92.99p/m) | 500Mbps Typical Evening Speeds
Dodo’s NBN 500 plan is currently discounted for the first six months, making it the cheapest 500Mbps plan among the roughly 30 we’ve analysed for that introductory period. Compared with the average cost of an NBN 500 plan ($93.58 as of April 2026), this plan offers great value for the first six months, and remains just under the average price when the introductory offer ends. As a provider, Dodo came second for download speeds in the ACCC’s April 2026 Measuring Broadband Report, a big improvement from last quarter, when it came seventh. After the first six months, this plan does go up to $92.99 per month – which is well over $80 per month, so you may want to consider switching – but the substantial discount means that over the first year, you’ll still pay less than $960 in total.

Best ongoing NBN plan under $80

Exetel One NBN 500 Plan | $80p/m | 500Mbps Typical Evening SpeedsAverage monthly cost for first year:Total cost for first year

Exetel One NBN 500 Plan | $80p/m | 500Mbps Typical Evening Speeds
Exetel’s only NBN plan is this 500Mbps offering and it costs exactly $80 per month. While this isn’t technically under $80 per month and there’s no introductory discount, it has the lowest ongoing price for NBN 500 of all the plans we compare, so it’s a great option if you want to just set-and-forget and not have to jump from provider to provider to take advantage of intro discounts. As mentioned above, the current average ongoing price for an NBN 500 plan is $93.58, which makes this plan excellent value at just $80 per month. In ACCC’s April 2026 Measuring Broadband Report, Exetel came third for average NBN download speeds, only beaten by Aussie Broadband and Dodo/iPrimus.
Average monthly cost for first year: $80

Other recommended NBN plans under $80

Tangerine Speedy Max NBN 500 Plan | $63.90p/m (for the first 6 months, then $88.90p/m) | 500Mbps Typical Evening Speeds
Tangerine’s NBN 500 plan is another that costs under the magic $960 total for the first year – that’s thanks to the current discount, which brings it down to $63.90 per month for the first six months. During this time, this plan is well under the average NBN 500 plan cost of around $94, and it remains under that price by almost $5 after the introductory offer ends, making its average monthly cost $76.40 over the first year. However, if you’re on a strict budget of under $80 per month, we’d advise hunting for a good introductory deal from another provider after the first year’s up.
Average monthly cost for first year: $76.40

FAQs

What speed can I expect from an NBN plan under $80?

There are a few NBN 500 plans that cost under $960 over the first year, thanks to introductory offers that bring the price down over the first six months. Unfortunately, there are no NBN 500 plans that have ongoing prices of under $80 per month, however Exetel’s NBN 500 plan costs exactly $80 per month.

Who is an NBN 500 plan good for?

NBN 500 is a newer speed tier that NBN Co launched last September, and it sits in the ‘Home Fast’ category, so it’s arguably more speed than most households need. However, it’s a great fit for larger homes with lots of connected devices, as well as heavy gamers or anyone who regularly downloads large files.
