Unlimited data mobile plans in Australia: the best uncapped deals right now
Never want to run out of mobile data? Here are the providers that offer unlimited data plans
These days, having plenty of mobile data is essential for many people, whether it’s for streaming, gaming or video calls on the go. One way to avoid running out of data is to opt for a plan with an unlimited allowance.
While there aren’t many providers offering caveat-free unlimited data options in Australia, we’ve researched to compare what’s available and help you find a plan that fits your needs.
To start with, if you’re looking for a truly unlimited data plan, the closest option you’ll find in Australia is this plan from Felix Mobile:
Felix Mobile | Unlimited Mobile Data Plan | $40 $20 per month (for the first 3 months, then $40) | Unlimited data at speeds up to 20Mbps | Vodafone 5G network
Felix Mobile is currently the only provider in Australia offering a true unlimited data plan. Priced at $40 per month, it’s currently available for just $20 per month for the first three months thanks to an introductory discount. While this plan includes unlimited data, speeds are capped at 20Mbps.
That’s still suitable for everyday tasks like browsing, social media, messaging and even some streaming, but may be too slow for those who need top speeds for large downloads. This plan also includes unlimited standard calls and texts and uses Vodafone’s 5G network. It’s a no lock-in contract postpaid plan that renews automatically every month, so there’s no need to recharge or worry about cancellation fees.
While Felix offers the only truly unlimited plan, several other providers in Australia offer what are called ‘limitless’ data plans. These do technically have a monthly data cap, but will allow you to continue using mobile data after your allowance is used up at reduced speeds, and don’t charge any extra fees for doing so.
Limitless data plans are a great way to avoid excess charges while still ensuring you’re never without internet. However, once your included data runs out, the speed of the limitless data will generally be slowed to around 1.5Mbps, which can make tasks like video streaming or large downloads more difficult.
Here are some of the main providers offering limitless data plans in Australia:
Telstra Upfront Postpaid plans | From $65p/m | Excess data capped at 1.5Mbps | Telstra 5G network
Telstra’s postpaid mobile plans start at $65 per month for 50GB. While this is definitely on the pricier side, they run on the largest mobile network in Australia and include access to Telstra 5G.
All postpaid plans come with unlimited data at 1.5Mbps after you use all your included data, meaning you won’t pay extra, but your browsing speed will slow to a crawl, and you may struggle with things like streaming video.
Optus Upfront Postpaid plans | From $55p/m | Excess data capped at 1.5Mbps | Optus 5G network
Optus’s SIM-only plans range from 50GB to 400GB of data per month. After using your included data, speeds are slowed to 1.5Mbps with no additional charges.
According to Optus, this slower speed is suitable for doing things like browsing and music streaming, but not ideal for video streaming due to potential buffering and increased loading times. All Optus postpaid plans also include 5G access.
Aussie Broadband Upfront Postpaid Plans | From $25p/m | Excess data capped at 1.5Mbps | Optus 5G access
Aussie Broadband is one of only a few smaller providers that offer limitless data on its postpaid plans. Aussie offers five mobile plans, all of which include limitless data after your included plan data is used, which is capped at 1.5Mbps.
Another perk of opting for a mobile plan from Aussie is that, because it's a smaller provider, mobile plans are generally more competitively priced than the major telcos, with plans starting from just $25 per month. All plans run on the Optus network and provide access to 5G.
Dodo Upfront Postpaid Plans | From $23 | Excess data capped at 256Kbps | Optus 4G/5G Network
Dodo offers four mobile plans starting from $23 per month. All include unlimited excess data, but speeds are capped at just 256Kbps once your included data is used up, which is significantly slower than other providers. At this speed, basic messaging and website browsing may still work, but most other tasks (particularly anything with audio or video) will be difficult.
Dodo plans run on the Optus network, with 5G access on all but the two cheapest options. Dodo is also the only provider we’ve seen that also offers data banking – its cheapest plan allows you to bank up to 500GB, while all others allow unlimited data rollover.
FAQs
What does ‘unlimited mobile data’ mean?
Unlimited mobile data means that there is no cap on the amount of data you can use, so you don’t have to worry about going over a capped data limit and being charged by the megabyte or gigabyte for excess usage.
What is the cheapest unlimited mobile data plan in Australia?
Out of all the plans we’ve compared, the cheapest plan that offers unlimited data is currently Felix’s Unlimited Mobile Data Plan, which is currently 50% off, costing only $20 per month for the first 3 months.
Can I use my unlimited data overseas?
Not usually. Most Australian mobile providers don’t let you use your included data overseas and instead offer international roaming at an additional cost. Vodafone is the exception in Australia, and allows postpaid customers to use their plan’s included data in over 100 other countries for a flat fee of $5 per day. However, note that this only covers your plan’s standard data allowance – it doesn’t extend to the unlimited (speed-capped) data that Vodafone customers can access in Australia if their included monthly data runs out.
If none of these unlimited plans suit, you may prefer one with a large amount of data. These are the most-popular plans with Getprice readers that include 220GB or more per month:
