As you’re probably aware, when it comes to mobile networks Telstra has the largest coverage in Australia. However, signing up for a plan directly with Telstra usually means paying a considerable premium. Thankfully, there’s an easy way to get access to the Telstra network without paying Telstra prices: sign up with one of the smaller (and cheaper) providers whose phone plans run on the Telstra Wholesale Network.

If you’re looking for an affordable option, now happens to be a great time to consider switching. Boost and Tangerine are two telcos who use the Telstra Wholesale Network, and both are currently offering compelling deals on select plans. It’s worth noting that Boost is the only small provider that uses the full Telstra network, while Tangerine uses the wholesale version – that means Tangerine doesn’t provide quite as much regional and very remote coverage as Boost, but it still covers 98.8% of the population, just shy of the full network's 99.7% reach.

Whether you prefer an affordable, flexible, month-to-month prepaid plan or a cheap long-expiry option, there are options available. Tangerine’s 30GB plan is ideal if you want a monthly prepaid plan that lets you switch providers whenever you like – and right now it’ll save you money thanks to a 50% discount for the first few months. Alternatively, Boost’s discounted $300 365-day plan works out cheaper overall in the first year, but also comes with slightly less data per month when averaged out. It also requires paying upfront for the full year and offers less flexibility if your needs change.

If either plan sounds like it’ll suit, here’s everything you need to know about these deals:

Tangerine $30 plan | $15p/m (for the first 4 months, then $30p/m) | 30GB | Month-to-monthTotal cost and data for the first year: $300 for 360GBMonthly average cost and data for first year: $25 for 30GB

Tangerine $30 plan | $15p/m (for the first 4 months, then $30p/m) | 30GB | Month-to-month
Tangerine’s $30 plan is currently half price for the first four months, bringing the cost down to just $15 per month for those who sign up before March 1. While 30GB isn’t a huge data allowance, it’s still more than the average Australian uses in a month, and works out to just $0.50 per GB during the promo period. Any unused data can be rolled over (up to 1000GB), so if you don’t use the full 30GB each month, it won’t go to waste. Even once the introductory offer ends, the plan remains competitively priced at $1 per GB, which is solid value for a plan that runs on the Telstra network and provides 5G access.
Total cost and data for the first year: $300 for 360GB
Monthly average cost and data for first year: $25 for 30GB

Boost $300 Plan | $300 $250 (equivalent of $20.84 per month) | 290GB (equivalent of 24.1GB per month) | 365 day expiryCost and data for the first year: $250 for 290GBMonthly average cost and data for first year: $20.84 for 24.1GB

Boost $300 Plan | $300 $250 (equivalent of $20.84 per month) | 290GB (equivalent of 24.1GB per month) | 365 day expiry
Boost’s $300 365-day expiry plan is currently discounted down to $250 and comes with a bonus 50GB of data (totalling 290GB instead of 240GB) for the first year. That works out to around $20.84 per month for 24.1GB of data. While that’s about 6GB per month less data than Tangerine’s plan, it’s also $50 cheaper over the first year.If you’re happy to pay upfront and want a cheap mobile plan that runs on Telstra’s full 5G network with more than 20GB of data per month, this is a great value option. Just keep in mind that if you want to recharge after the first 365 days, you’ll pay the full $300 and receive 240GB – so we’d be looking for an alternative when that date rolls around. Note too that this offer ends on March 2, so be sure to get in quick if you want to secure this deal.
