  7. In 1961 Riedel introduced a revolutionary concept - a line of wine glasses created in different sizes and shapes. Before this, conventional stemware had used a single basic bowl shape, with only the size varying depending on use. The concept was illustrated to perfection with the introduction of the hand-made Sommeliers series in 1973. The size and shape of each Sommeliers glass will deliver a wine or spirit to the nose and palate in such a way that it can fully express its personality. Sommeliers Bordeaux Grand Cru features: Handmade from crystal. Recommended for: Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, Medoc, Merlot, St Emillon. Care & Cleaning: All Riedel glassware is dishwasher safe, and has been tested by Riedel to ensure a longer lifespan when washed in this manner. If you do need to wash your Riedel glassware by hand, wash the glass under warm water with detergent and rinse the glass very carefully. To avoid any staining of your Riedel glasses, you should wash them using only soft water - that is, water with a low mineral content. If stains emerge, you can use white vinegar to remove them. Avoid scratches to your glassware by not allowing your Riedel glasses to come in contact with any other glasses or metal. Polish your glasses using two towels, and avoid holding the glass by the base - this could case the stem to snap. Keep your cleaning towels clean as well, in order to avoid rubbing any grease on to your Riedel glassware. Wash your cleaning towels at boiling temperature, without linen or fabric softener. Store your glasses away from other items with a strong odour, as this can taint the glass and in turn your wine. Code Number: 400-00. Height: 27cm. Capacity: 860ml.

  18. The real excitement in Champagne is from the small artisan producers in Cotes des Blanc. Charles and Emmanuel Fourny from Vertus are at the forefront of that excitement. They produce fabulous Cuvees of ridiculously good quality. This is beautiful Champagne from salt of the earth, hard working people and as good as it gets for the special moments. The Soils are brown topsoil over chalk. The fruit comes from several plots near the village of Vertus. Chardonnay plots are quite fine and minerally, whilst the Pinot Noir component fuller, richer and more fleshy. Slopes face South and South-East giving optimal maturing conditions. Average age of the vines is 40 years. Hand-picked. Fine but complex and funky aromas typical of Vertus. Quite chalky and creamy with some biscuit like characters from the Pinot Noir. 40% Reserve wines from previous vintages added. Traditional ‘house’ style. On tirage for 2 ½ years. Dosage is 6 grams / litre. “This welcome new arrival is imported by De Bortoli. The style is chardonnay driven but very complex, with some aldehydes in a nutty, appley bouquet of great depth and complexity. It's nervy, taut and refined in the mouth with lip smacking tang.”- 95 Points; Huon Hooke Bloody terrific fizz these Fournys. My first experience of them and wow, this is what it’s all about. Grande Reserve is a blend of 80% chardonnay and 20% pinot noir/pinot meunier. 30-40% reserve wine from previous two vintages. In the overall landscape – even in such competitive Champagne times – I’d reckon $65 is very good value for what’s in the bottle here. “ - 94 Points Campbell Mattinson
