  1. After Many Days: My Life as a Spy and Other Grand Adventures - Book Free Shipping

After Many Days tells the story of Shirley H. Perry, a story that encompasses her many adventures. From her days as a CIA operative during the Cold War in Vienna to her life of intrigue behind the Iron Curtain and details of her Halliburton-inspired travels around the Middle East during that period, hers is truly a life "different from the ordinary."Her post-CIA life is riveting as well. Later peregrinations with her family took her to Luxembourg City, where she founded the American School of Luxembourg, and to Toronto, where she returned to university to acquire an MBA.In the final chapters, she writes about uprooting, moving out and on to a new life full of new adventures.

  2. A Round-Heeled Woman: My Late-Life Adventures in Sex and Romance - Book Free Shipping

"Round-heeled" is an old-fashioned label for a woman who is promiscuous—someone who nowadays might be called "easy." It's a surprising way for a cultured English teacher with a passion for the novels of Anthony Trollope to describe herself, but then that's just the first of many surprises to be found in this poignant, funny, utterly unique memoir. Jane Juska is a smart, energetic divorcee who decided she'd been celibate too long, and placed the following personal ad in her favorite newspaper, The New York Review of Books:Before I turn 67—next March—I would like to have a lot of sex with a man I like. If you want to talk first, Trollope works for me.This closing reference was a nod to her favorite author, of course. The response was overwhelming, and Juska took a sabbatical from teaching to meet some of the men who had replied. And since her ad made it clear that she wasn't expecting just hand-holding, her dates zipped from first base to home plate in record time.Juska is a totally engaging, perceptive writer, funny and frank about her exploits. It's high time someone revealed the fact that older single people are as eager for sex and intimacy as their younger counterparts. Jane Juska's brave, honest memoir will probably raise eyebrows and blood pressure, but it will undoubtedly appeal to the very large audience of grown-up readers who will be fascinated and inspired by her daring adventure."From the Hardcover edition."

  10. My Big Breast Adventure: or How I Found the Dalai Lama in My Letterbox - Book Free Shipping

In mid-December 2013 Jennifer McDonald was diagnosed with breast cancer, an infiltrating lobular carcinoma to be exact. Up until the moment of diagnosis she'd thought she was pretty in tune with her body, but she sure as hell didn't see this coming. There's no breast cancer in her family and she has three sisters, two older and one younger, none of whom have been diagnosed with anything more than an easily dispatched colorectal polyp. This prompted her son, 13 at the time, to ask the aunt who looked after him while she was in surgery, "Why did it have to be my mum?"...Why indeed. In a bid to make sense of what was happening to her, Jen started writing a series of blogposts entitled My Big Breast Adventure while undergoing, if you'll pardon the expression, the 'pointy-end' of treatment throughout 2014 and 2015. With funny and provocative titles like Cut, Poison, Burn...and Laugh, Dying and Other Inconveniences, What the FEC? and The Girl with the Dolphin Tattoo, Jen blogged 32 times over that two year period garnering an avid following and touching many people's lives. Her oncologist, who's mentioned many times in various posts, has written the Foreword for the book that this blog has now become. Here's a sample of what he and others have said: "No patient going through cancer just wants 'support'. At best, they would like the huge, scary roller-coaster called 'treatment' to stop and let them off. At least, they would like to meet someone else on the ride who can give words to the experience - and make some sense of it all. Jen McDonald is that person."

  13. Going Public: My Adventures Inside the Sec and How to Prevent the Next Devastating Crisis - Book Free Shipping

An insider's look at the SEC and the changes needed to strengthen America's financial system In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, the U.S. stock market went through seismic ruptures that destroyed businesses and damaged millions of lives. Daily revelations about an overly leveraged investment sector and endless scandal only underlined the vulnerability of the U.S. financial system. Facing its own ineptitude, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had to shape up, but how would that be possible in a dysfunctional agency riddled with bureaucratic bungling, soul-killing work rules, and civil service privileges that defied common sense? In Going Public, Norm Champ details his time spent as the Director of the Division of Investment Management at the SEC. He offers a rare examination inside a major federal agency during a crisis, and his insights and accounts illuminate conditions in our economy today. His narrative is supported by: * Explanations on the inner workings of hedge funds, economic policy and politics, investing, and inefficient federal agencies * Recommendations for policy changes to create healthy, corruption-free markets and help prepare Americans for future crises * First-hand account of how players such as Ben Bernanke and Elizabeth Warren battled to shape Wall Street and financial reform * Exploration of a string of narrowly averted financial disasters that were hidden from the world-including one that has never been made public Though there are signals that we are recreating prime conditions for another crisis, Champ shows how policymakers can avoid triggering these events, strengthen America's financial system, and through commonsense regulation and increased financial literacy, make the U.S. the world's most vibrant market.

  16. Above the Line: My Wild Oats Adventure - Book Free Shipping

A funny, fierce, imaginative memoir chronicling New York Times bestselling author and Academy Award winner Shirley MacLaine's remarkable experiences filming Wild Oats in the Canary Islands and the extraordinary memories her time there brought forth of a past life on the lost continent of Atlantis. Her agent advised her not to get on the plane. The male leads weren't even cast. The financing was shaky at best. The script had been rewritten countless times. And yet something about Wild Oats lured Shirley MacLaine to the film's location shoot in the far-off Canary Islands–and straight to the center of one of the most thrilling and paradigm-shifting adventures of her life. The making of the film reads like a screwball comedy, as the cast and crew face unpredictable daily obstacles with ingenuity, grit, and personal sacrifice. Yet the chaos leads Shirley to a revelatory new understanding of the demise of one of history's most elusive yet endlessly intriguing places. Scholars have long theorized that Spain's Canary Islands are the remnants of the mighty lost continent of Atlantis. As the movie set descends into pandemonium, Shirley finds fascinating corollaries between the island's cataclysmic fate and our own dangerous trajectory. Can we learn the lessons the citizens of Atlantis failed to comprehend? The answer is borne out of recovered memories from Shirley's past life on Atlantis and through a series of meditations that reveal the necessity of unfettered imagination when looking for bold new truths, rendering this evocative, irreverent, and honest memoir essential reading for anyone seeking a broader understanding of what it means to be human–both where we came from and where we are going.
