  1. Here's a merlot that is very lightly oaked and full of fruit, so it would go down well with some lamb kebabs. Plenty of plums and dark fruits adorn the nose, along with a hint of mint. The palate is more medium-bodied and juicy, with gentle, pillowy tannins, and a gentle, easy-going finish that makes it totally smashable!

  2. Now, don’t come any of that 'Sideways' rubbish of I'm not drinking #$%* merlot! Yes you are, and here is a good place to ease yourself into it, because it's got 40% cab sav, too. It's deep and full-bodied, displaying fragrant, plummy fruits on the nose with a hint of earthiness. The palate is powerful yet approachable with a dark-berried centre, fine, mellow tannins, and a dry, fruity finish with a savoury twist. It's great, lazy drinking you don't have to think too much about.

  3. Tamburlaine are one of the most environmentally-friendly wineries in the country, and this organic merlot is just the thing if you are looking for something smooth and fruity with some 'feel good' factor. Smells of plums, mulberries, florals and cedary oak waft out of the glass, whilst the palate is more medium-bodied and juicy fruity, with plum and red fruit flavours, licks of toast, gentle tannins, and a soft, succulent finish. It's not a complicated wine, but it is a good drink!

  5. Merlot is your friend is the mantra at the Cracka HQ as we convince people there’s a lot to be like about this often ridiculed red. The Elderton’s are not afraid to embrace the grape and have turned out a Barossa version that is generous and round with heaps of flavour. Expect a core of plum and spice before a palate of rich fruitcake and red fruits that is influenced by cedary oak and has firm grained tannins on the finish.

  6. A medium-bodied wine proudly proclaiming its Tassie heritage. The nose shows a wonderful complexity and intensity of sweet red fruits, fruitcake and cedar. On the palate, soft tannins and sweet fruit make this wine perfect for BBQ rib eye beef, roast veal or braised lamb shanks. Appearance: Dark, rich cherry. Nose: Soft berries and earthiness. Palate: Fine tannins. Cellaring: Very pleasant now but great potential, 5 to 7 years. Alcohol: 13.0% Awards Gold medal & Trophy -National Cool Climate Wine Show, Bathurst, October 2014.

  7. The wines of Vanya Cullen have been a pivotal part of the Margaret River’s dominance when it comes to the red blending of Cabernet and Merlot. There is a real passion behind this label starting in the vineyard that are all farmed biodynamically to ensure pristine quality. 2009 proved to be another stellar vintage in the West and the aromas of redcurrant and plum are scintillating precursors to a sumptuous palate. It’s firm and elegant with a seamless tannin profile before a long, balanced finish.

  8. The Hay Shed Hill story is nothing if not a good one, with the winery recently returning to family hands via a takeover from renowned Margaret River winemaker Michael Kerrigan. The wines have continued to look good every year since. In this instance the operation has pumped out a rather delicious, rather classic Margaret River red blend in a style that shows power and grace. An aristocratic wine even, which is bloody marvellous considering the price-point. Yes! Yes!

  9. Want a Merlot that delivers all the generosity of a warm hug, then you’ll find it all embodied in the Smith and Hooper, a wine that is just such reliable drinking. The fruit for this mellow Merlot comes from Wrattonbully on the Limestone Coast and not only shows fruit vibrancy but an earthy complexity that ensures it would pair well with a plate of ribs. This seductive slurper shows, structure, balance and superbly soft fruit before a touch of spice on the long finish.

  10. A second label for reinvigorated Margaret River winery Hayshed Hill, this looks very bit the Margaret River Cabernet Merlot, needing just a little more penetration and power to really push on through into the 'serious wine' territory. Much to like.

This red blend offering is just that and shows rich red and black fruits on the nose, together with whiffs of dried herbs and earthy savouriness. The palate is more medium-bodied and dry with a plush plummy fruit centre, soft spices, fine tannins, and a juicy, savoury-edged finish. It's excellent value, and would be great with red meat dishes.

  12. This more medium-bodied merlot is not what it seems. There's a cheeky splash of sangiovese in the mix, which compliments everything rather nicely. It's a little more than a soft and fruity number, showing aromas of red cherries, dark plums and star anise on the nose, with just a touch of earthy savouriness. The palate has a richness of fruit, but it also has a bit of grip to the tannins that lead to a cherry and savoury finish that screams out for food. it's a bargain at the price, and would be great with some cured meats, or even braised oxtail.

  13. The great thing about merlot is that it goes down easy and everyone likes it. It's like that pair of old slippers you just can't part with because they are so comfy. This offering from Ferngrove is in that cuddly vein showing aromas of dark plums and berries with a touch of vanilla on the nose. The palate is soft a fleshy with a fruity middle, friendly tannins, and a dry, succulent finish. A nice oxtail ragu will go down well with this.

  14. Riesling from the Barossa! Yes! Some pretty spiffy rieslings have come out of this region, and this one is no different. Aromas of honeysuckle florals and lime citrus rise from the glass before descending on the light-bodied, dry palate, along with a talcy mouthfeel, frisky acidity, and a bright, limy finish. It's best drunk over the next couple of years to get the best out of it.

  15. This multi-regional blend chardy is Jacobs Creek's nod to cooler-climate regions and sites. It's a more oaky style, and shows appealing peaches, dairy, nuttiness and subtle citrus on the nose, whilst the palate is bright, toasty and rounded, with peaches and cream flavours, generous licks of oak, and a soft, creamy finish. Roast chicken here we come!

  17. OK, so it wasn't made by leaving the grapes on the vine in the snow, but this is as close as we are going to get here in Aussieland, and this one is a little beauty! Orange and lime marmalade smells leap out of the glass, together with stone fruits and honeysuckle. The palate is sweet and rich, with more candied citrus and pineapple cube flavours, and a bright, non-cloying finish which is a lovely surprise. Excellent with fruity desserts!

  18. Jacobs Creek step it up a bit here with this cab sav from the classic region of Coonawarra. Medium to fuller-bodied in style, it shows lots of blackcurrants, crushed leaf, mint and black olives on the nose, meanwhile the palate is juicy and a little savoury, with a generous lick of toasted cedar, a fine but solid line of tannins, and a nice plummy finish with a kick of spiciness in the tail. It will cellar for a few years, but would be the bomb the beef spare ribs tonight.

  19. Spring weather was dry and warm and was followed by the hottest and driest summer ever recorded. The whites have a good acid structure, ripe fruit and lower alcohol. Nectarine and grapefruit aromas mingled with subtle toasty oak, followed by fresh yet complex flavours and lengthy mineral cool climate acid. Fresh and floral with light nutty aromas. The palate is rich, full with ripe fruit, balanced with crisp acid and delicate flavours. Will match beautifully with with sage barbecued quail.
