  1. Australia is having a love affair with pinot gris right now, and this is from one of our most trusted wine producers. It's a rich, fleshy style of PG that shows poached pears and lemon citrus on the nose, along with a hint of dairy and flaked almonds. The palate is fulsome and soft, with pear-like flavours, a creamy mouthfeel, approachable acidity and a fresh, vibrant, lip-smacking finish. Excellent with poached salmon or Thai fishcakes.

  3. Brown Brothers has been a trusted name in wine for longer than most can remember, and this durif is certainly a departure from the ballsy styles the variety can produce. Hailing from a fantastic year in Heathcote, it weighs in at 14% alcohol and displays smells of dark berries and plums, subtle spice and a touch of smokiness on the nose before the palate kicks in with supple dark fruit flavours, a decent line of slightly chewy tannins, and a smooth, spicy finish. Some rare roast meats would go down well with this.

  4. As easy-drinking value wines go, you can’t go too wrong with this dolcetto shiraz blend from Brown Brothers. This is no 'try hard' wine, in fact the only thing it tries hard to do is be a good drink - which it is! The awesome bright purple colour will suck you in right away, then the vibrant red and black berries with just a sniff of anise will entice you more. The palate is light to medium-bodied, soft and fruit-sweet with a gentle, fruity mouthfeel, a cheeky spritz, and a soft, refreshing finish. It scores highly on the drinkability scale.

  5. It’s rare to come across the grape Tarrango in Australia because it was an experimental grape developed by the CSIRO in 1965 using the grapes Touriga and Sultana. The idea was to create a light bodied red to suit our climate that can be chilled and offers refreshment. On the nose you’ll find attractive aromas of cherry and spice that follow onto the delicate, light and juicy palate. It finishes dry with an intense fruit flavour and is the ideal compliment to spicy dishes like Indian.

  6. Brown Brothers have really been kicking some goals with this easy drinking, highly smashable styles. This Prosecco weighs in at 12% alcohol and has a sneaky splash of cienna in the mix to add some red fruits to the smells and tastes. The palate is more off-dry, with fun bubbles, red berry and watermelon flavours, and a decent, fresh finish. Great with some grilled ocean trout.

  7. How do Brown Brothers do it? It’s an oft asked statement in the Cracka offices. We really find it hard to understand how they can turn out this quality across such an immense range. This is a perky little Moscato style that is attractively packaged and priced. It appears pale yellow with aromas of sherbert, musk, fresh apples and a lift of passionfruit. The fruit vibrancy appears on the palate with a burst of bubbles before a zesty finish. Because it’s only 6% you’ll be able to serve this at a brunch as it would pair well with fresh fruit as well as scrambled eggs on toast.

  8. Made from various muscat grapes, the Lexia has been a favourite of the Aussie wine drinker for many, many years. It's a lower alcohol (10%), sweeter style of wine that shows lots of musk stick, grapey and lychee aromas on the nose that satisfies the senses. The palate is lighter-bodied and sweet with zesty acidity, and a refreshing finish that will have you reaching for another glass. Try it chilled as an aperitif, or with soft cheeses.

  9. Here we have a single vineyard shiraz from Heathcote produced in an outstanding year for the region. It's a fuller-bodied style at 14.5% and shows rich, ripe smells of squished red berries, pepper spice and generous toasty oak on the nose. Meanwhile, the palate is lush and succulent, with spiced berry flavours, a decent line of slightly grippy tannins courtesy of the oak, and a fresh, fruity finish. Slow-roast lamb shoulder with veggies would be great with this!

  10. Crouchen is a grape style you see very little of in Australia, but it’s rife in the Pyrenees region of France and even in South Africa. Here Brown Brothers have blended it with Riesling to create an intensely aromatic white. Next time you are heading to your local Thai, grab this by the neck and unleash it once your curry has arrived. Ripe aromas of peach, pear and passionfruit move towards a mouth-filling and textured palate punctuated by lively fruit before a crisp finish. Enjoy it now, chilled and served with aforementioned spicy Asian dishes.

  11. Cienna is a grape variety that was 'invented' right here in Oz, and is a cross between the Spanish sumoll grape and cab sav. This is a full-on sparkling style that would serve as a low-alcohol alternative to a sparkling Rose. Lots of bright, sweet red berries jump around the nose hairs, along with a smidgen of dried herbs. The palate is bubbly, a bit sweet and buttery, with loads of strawberry flavours and a soft, juicy finish. It wouldn't be out of place with a lamb korma.
