  3. No history of the Australian wine industry is complete without referencing Saltram, the Barossa winery that's created prestigious wines since 1859. This Winemakers Reserve Barossa Shiraz won our coveted 2016 Red Wine of the Year prize against very strong competition. Made with select parcels of shiraz harvested from expressive vineyards in the heart of the Barossa, it's soft and plush with a great hit of dark berry fruits and spice.

Aromas of fleshy plums and blackberries jump out of the glass, along with sniffs of toastiness and pepper spice. 5. What does Reserve mean? Is it a fancy name the winery can slap on the label and then charge you three times the price? No, of course not. Reserve means it’s been made with the utmost care, hand picked fruit, maybe even hand pressed and then stored in fancy French oak so the wine can soak up the luxuriant flavours. Tim Smith’s Reserve Shiraz tastes like it’s had a huge amount of TLC. It’s got cherry fruit vibrancy, cedary oak and plush mouthfeel.

  6. Many of Britain’s plants and animals have come to rely upon gardens as an essential lifeline as their natural habitats come under increasing pressure from human activity and global warming. This comprehensive book explains the best ways to attract wildlife to gardens and encourage it to stay there. Written in a light-hearted yet passionate and authoritative style, the guide challenges popular notions of `weeds’ and `pests’ and invites gardeners to think again about the choices they make. Chris Packham’s informative and lively text is complemented by attractive photographs and illustrations that will encourage an interest in the natural world on your doorstep, whether your `garden’ is a rural idyll or an urban window box. Chris argues that we have become so spellbound by ‘nature’s celebrities’ – tigers, pandas and their ilk – that we are in danger of overlooking the most exciting species of all: those that we can touch, smell and observe in our own backyard.

The Reserve Shiraz was made from mature Shiraz vines grown on elevated sites at Kyeema, and Mount Nanima near Murrumbateman.TASTING NOTESThis has a whole lot of wow factor with very exuberant, complex and fragrant perfume and spices on the nose. Plenty of bright ripe raspberry and blackberry fruits, strawberries too, all neatly captured. The palate has a swathe of fine tannin, really crunchy and energetic, concentrated yet fine. Dark chocolate, raspberry cream and swirling spice play out through the finish. Brilliant wine and drinking well already with a couple of decades of aging ahead too.Liquor ActLiquor Act 2007. 8. A lovely dry red wine with charry toasted oak characters adding depth and interest to the full flavoured fruit characters. This has a long and lingering palate that makes a great partner to rich, flavoursome red meat dishes or a platter of hard-rind, mature cheeses.

  9. The beautiful Mudgee region in NSW is known as a "nest in the hills" - it's surrounded by rolling hills that shelter the land, allowing grapes to flourish and ripen to perfection. This Shiraz impressed our tasting panel with its dense, plump texture and rich flavour. It's one of the stars of the region and we recommend stocking up before the vintage sells out.

  10. Amelia Park source grapes from various W.A wine regions, and in this instance they have gone to the Frankland River. This is quite a rich, almost chocolaty style of shiraz that shows ripe dark berries and cherries on the nose, along with some pepper spice and mocha. The palate is full-bodied and sweetly-fruited, with a nice core of spiced plums, slinky tannins, and a sultry finish with a bit of tightness to it. This will improve further in the cellar, or you can decant it tonight and serve with some beef wellington.

  11. Made from the simply outstanding 2012 vintage, this Shiraz comes from a single vineyard in Willunga, located in the southern end of McLaren Vale. Matured for over 12 months in French oak, I think this is the finest wine yet under the Tyrrell’s Red Dirt or Willunga labels - with deep purple/red flavours; layers of opulent choc-blackberry fruit and a touch of spice.

  12. Heathcote, the home of Victoria's biggest and best Shiraz is the natural home of our Tyrrell's Red Dirt Shiraz, which looks bigger and badder this year. We caught up with Bruce Tyrrell recently and said 'let’s make this wine even better'. So we tasted some barrels, selected the very best and have bottled the very first Tyrrell's Red Dirt Reserve Heathcote Shiraz. If you liked the 2010, you will love the new 2013 vintage - It is bigger, bolder, rounder (thanks to the warm vintage) and with some extra tannin oomph that will help it get even better in the cellar. We recommend you decant it to get the very best out of this bad boy.

  13. Sandalford own one of the oldest Vineyard plots in the Margaret River, planted in 1970 and this is where all the fruit for the premium range is drawn from. Still regarded as one of the best vintages in the region on record so expect to be blown away by the quality. This Shiraz is unmistakably varietal with seductive black fruit on the nose before a sweet, jubey fruit palate and some spicy, herbal tones. The oak is subtle, the finish long with loads of generous tannins. It will cellar well for the next decade but will pair well with steak, lamb or even venison.

  14. Frankland Estate Shiraz, just the very mention of it makes us go a bit giddy in the knees. It’s all that cooler climate spice that we gravitate to and we think you’ll love this spicy Shiraz from this five star rated winery. It’s dense and inky with an intense nose of black fruit, licorice and black pepper. It’s a rich, complex beast, exuding plum, chocolate and aniseed. Balanced and finely structured this will reward for many years to come. We simply don’t have the patience to wait.

  15. Henry's Drive step it up with this full-bodied, rich wine from a single vineyard in Padthaway. It’s a very concentrated wine, with dense colour and the dark fruits to match, along with hints of choc-mint, pepper and star anise spice. The palate is rich and cherry jam-like, with fine tannins and a warm alcohol cuddle for the tonsils on the way down. Big red lovers will enjoy this one!

  16. Here we have a fuller-bodied shiraz out of the Barossa that has the benefit of a few years in bottle, so it is nice and soft to drink. Smells of preserved plums, cherries and savouriness decorate the nose, whilst the palate is full and still rich, with plum and earthy flavours, mellow tannins, and a a kick of vanilla in the tail. Still has a few years in it and would be great with slow-roast lamb shoulder.

  17. Here's another dead set bargain from Berton in the rich and luscious end of town. Ripe aromas of dark berries and cherries light up the nasal passages, together with hints of mint, toast and pepper spice. The palate is full warm and cuddly with truck loads of dark fruit flavours, fine, approachable tannins, and a spicy, plummy finish. BBQ meats would be great with a glass of this!
