  1. Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped to forge Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. Bin 389 also exemplifies the judicious balance of fruit and oak. “It’s a wine with a ‘wow’ introduction. It throws beautiful, beautiful aroma. It’s distinguished by it. It’s sweet, pudding-like, like fresh vanilla, like lemon delicious. I went to taste this wine and couldn’t get past the nose; I just wanted to go on enjoying its aromatics. It’s smells every bit Penfolds but every bit itself. The palate is true to established form, with blackcurrant and bay leaf notes rigged to a powerful motor of tannin. Creamy/vanillin oak gets on with business too but again the fruit stares it down. From every angle this is a belter of a Bin 389. It’s best consumed any time between now and the apocalypse, or thereabouts. “ – 96 Points Campbell Mattinson “Matured for 12 months in American hogsheads (32% new). Unapologetically made with the don't fix if it isn't broken aphorism. It is tightly structured, with faultless attention to detail - wheels within wheels stuff, but inexorable in sending its black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant) flavour message. Despite its full body, and its far-reaching longevity, it's tailor-made for the saltbush lamb shoulder of tonight's dinner.” – 97 Points James Halliday ““A classic vintage with brilliant aromatic complexity, proportion and balance. “Pound for pound”, probably the wine of the 2017 release.” 98 Points Andrew Caillard MW

  2. "Lovely wine” – 96 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday 96 Points Ray Jordan This wine expresses the distinct regional profile of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon and the site characters it takes from the Vasse Felix vineyards, with a focus on Wilyabrup. It was the first red wine produced in Margaret River and has been made every year since 1972. Cabernet is a robust variety ideally suited to Margaret River's climate and deep, well drained soils. “Cabernet, like chardonnay has been a particular focus for Vasse Felix. This is a special wine from a special vintage. Elegance and refinement personified. Leafy floral notes on the nose. But it is the palate that really sings. It's relatively tight with a core of fine oak and firmish silky tannins, but there is sweet fleshy fruit held with focus that extends effortlessly to the finish.” – 96 Points Ray Jordan “Vivid crimson-purple; it would be hard to find a more elegant, yet razor-sharp expression of Margaret River cabernet. It has cassis nailed to its mast, the sails of bay leaf, perfectly integrated oak and fine-grained, but insistent, tannins. Lovely wine” – 96 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday

  17. Penfolds BIN 407 Cabernet SauvignonVARIETAL Cabernet Sauvignon REGION Wrattonbully, Coonawarra, Padthaway, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Australia ABV% 14.5% FOOD PAIRING NOTES Pork belly; Asian cuisine PROFILE Launched with the 1990 vintage in 1993, Bin 407 was developed in response to the increasing availability of high quality cabernet sauvignon fruit. Inspired by Bin 707, Bin 407 offers varietal definition and approachability, yet still with structure and depth of flavour. Textbook cabernet sauvignon, the varietally expressive Bin 407 highlights the rewards of Penfolds multi-region, multi-vineyard blending, with a core of ripe fruit supported by sensitive use of French and American oak. TASTING NOTES Bright crimson red, aromas not dissimilar to Thai/Vietnamese coriander, betel-leaf, and then - chive, lime, grapefruit dressing and Asian spices; green tea; Thai beef salad spices, nuttiness. Redemptive cabernet markers - cassis and violet aromas, authenticating a South Australian birthplace. Upon sitting " almost a powdery sprinkling of 'soot/coal dust' and, consistent to this theme " dusty oak! Familial kirsch and tomato puree cabernet flavours underpinned by a pan-jus meatiness, cola. Beneath "a vinous slurry, sharpening-stone replete with oil, graphite/ironstone. Sleek, elongated tannins (not grippy) align with judicious oak to convey flavours completely and effortlessly across palate. Liquor Act Liquor Act 2007.
