  1. 6 x 2010 Forest Hill Vineyard Block 9 Shiraz

Here's a deep, brooding wine that demands a little time in the cellar, but it is starting to show itself now. Scents of dark cherries and berries, cinnamon spice and earthiness decorate the nose, whilst the palate is medium to fuller-bodied, with a succulent cherry centre, licks of dried herbs, a solid line of tannins, and a slinky, earthy spice finish. Recommend giving it a good decant before serving.

  2. 6 x 2010 Galli Estate Artigiano Block Two Shiraz

Shiraz from Heathcote is a style that is intrinsically connected to the soil. Excuse us if we sound like hippies, but the notion of the soil imparting its imprint is essential to winemaking and Galli Estate understand this. The Cambrian soil of Heathcote is millions of years old and the perfect place for Shiraz to pick up some mineral characters. Concentrated and full of bold, black fruits and spice as well as an earthy complexity this wine makes even more sense with steak. Structured and balanced with impeccable length, no wonder they call it heavenly Heathcote.

  5. Ashton Hills Sparkling Shiraz 2010

Hailing from the Wendouree Vineyard The 2010 Sparkling Shiraz is drawn from the Clare Valley from grapes of dry grown, low yielding vines, half of which were planted in 1919. Following ageing in old oak for four years the base wine was re-fermented in bottle, creating an exceptional sparkling wine that balances power with finesse. Drink now or cellar for further complexity. Serve chilled Sparkling shiraz grown on 1919 plantings at Wendouree. Or at least a large-ish part of the wine comes off these vines. It was aged in old oak for four years before being re-fermented in bottle. It was disgorged last August.

  6. Paxton Jones Block Shiraz 2013

96 Points & Special Value Wine Campbell Mattinson This is McLaren Vale Shiraz at its finest. From the acclaimed 'Jones Block', this wine is well regarded for its generous, yet elegant style. A small parcel was selected from our century old vines for complex fruit flavours and seamless structure. Grapes are hand pruned; wine is aged in fine grained French and American oak. As always, no corners cut. A rich, savoury and spicy blend, this wine has a fleshy middle palate and great length. “This one looks the goods. It's thick with blackberried fruit flavour but there are rounds of earthen, coffeed complexity; it doesn't taste simple and yet it doesn't invoke a headache in its attempt to impress. The finish is long and well framed; it will live a long life.” – 96 Points & Special Value Wine Campbell Mattinson

This Shiraz is unmistakably varietal with seductive black fruit on the nose before a sweet, jubey fruit palate and some spicy, herbal tones. 14. 6 x 2010 Harewood Estate Great Southern Reserve Shiraz

Frankland Estate Shiraz, just the very mention of it makes us go a bit giddy in the knees. It’s all that cooler climate spice that we gravitate to and we think you’ll love this spicy Shiraz from this five star rated winery. It’s dense and inky with an intense nose of black fruit, licorice and black pepper. It’s a rich, complex beast, exuding plum, chocolate and aniseed. Balanced and finely structured this will reward for many years to come. We simply don’t have the patience to wait.

  15. 12 x 2010 Geoff Merrill Premium Shiraz

We love a full throttle McLaren Vale Shiraz at Cracka and one of the godfathers of the Vale is the moustachioed maestro Geoff Merrill. This is what the Vale is all about, regional aromas of red berries, licorice, leather and spice. The palate is ripe and generous, warm and seductive with a touch of oak before soft tannins fill out the finish. It will cellar well if you have the will power, if not, it will enjoy being served with hearty meat dishes.

At 14.3% alcohol, this is quite an elegant wine from Rolf Binder. It's quite fragrant and floral on the nose, as well as showing some appealing sweet smelling red fruits. 19. 6 x 2010 Balgownie Estate Black Label Sparkling Shiraz

Australia’s love affair with sparkling reds, particularly Shiraz, is unique to the world of wine as no–one else really produces it. Strangely, it only seems to come out once a year, at Christmas time, but we feel that we should see more of this style of wine pioneered, particularly at Summer barbecues. This is a delicious example from Balgownie made with fruit from Bendigo and Heathcote. Dark fruit aromas backed up by chocolate and coffee it falls effortlessly onto the palate offering a real fizzy tang of fruit and coating the mouth in vibrant berried refreshment. A really good style, but please don’t wait till Christmas to open it
