The nuns of the order nurture Gabrielle’s exceptional sewing skills, a talent that would propel the willful young woman into a life far removed from the drudgery of her childhood.Burning with ambition, the petite brunette transforms herself into Coco, by day a hard-working seamstress and by night a singer in a nightclub, where her incandescence draws in a wealthy gentleman who becomes the love of her life. She immerses herself in his world of money and luxury, discovering a freedom that sparks her creativity. But it is only when her lover takes her to Paris that Coco discovers her destiny.Rejecting the frilly, corseted silhouette of the past, Coco’s sleek, minimalist styles reflect the youthful ease and confidence of the 1920s modern woman. And when Paris falls to the Nazis, Coco is forced to make choices that will haunt her always.

    De Lempicka

Freewheeling Tamara de Lempicka, icon of Art DecoTamara de Lempicka (1896 1980) lived art in the fast lane. With an appetite for glamour and fame as much as Left Bank bohemianism, she fled her native Russia after the Bolshevik revolution and set about taking Paris by storm. Her prolific, monumental oeuvre remains one of the most vivid documents of 1920s Art Deco. De Lempicka s style deployed cool colors and tight, post-cubist forms into an at once neoclassical and voluptuous figuration. Her subjects, often nude, are sensual, aloof, and powerful. Bedecked in seductive light and textures, they command our attention but typically avert their gaze with an aspect of haughty grandeur. Her subjects include both high-society patrons and progressive portraits of emancipated and lesbian women, such as Women Bathing, Portrait of Suzy Solidor, and her notorious Self-Portrait in the Green Bugatti, showing Tamara behind the wheel. A vision of speed, sophistication, and independence, the work was commissioned for the cover of German magazine Die Dame, which defined de Lempicka as the epitome of women s liberation. Through some of her finest, most compelling portraits, this introduction to de Lempicka explores the artist s unique visual language and its privileged place not only in the annals of interwar art but also in the history of female artists and in our collective consciousness of the Roaring Twenties.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions”

    The Kim Kardashian Principle

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERHow do social media stars generate such obsession – even more than the Hollywood A-list? And what can they teach us about making our own ideas, products and services break through? The world’s leading authority on celebrity branding, Jeetendr Sehdev, tackles these questions head on. Sehdev shows why successful images today – the most famous being Kim Kardashian – are not photoshopped to perfection, but flawed, vulnerable, and in-your-face. This total transparency generates a level of authenticity with audiences that traditional marketing tactics just can’t touch. The Kim Kardashian Principle reveals the people, products and brands that do it best – from YouTube sensations like Pew Die Pie to taxi-hailing app Uber – and proves why the old strategies aren’t working. After all, in a world where a big booty can break the internet, self-obsession is a must-have. No posturing, no apologies, and no shying away from the spotlight. The Kim Kardashian Principle is a fresh, provocative and eye-opening guide to understanding why only the boldest and baddest ideas will survive – and how to make sure yours is one of them.

    Madonna - Nudes +

Martin H. M. Schreiber rose to international prominence when his shots of a nude, pre-fame Madonna appeared in the September 1985 issue of Playboy magazine. While he is proud of the shots, Schreiber regrets not having had the chance to do a one-on-one shoot with Madonna. “I was taking pictures from behind my students, it wasn’t as if I had a private session and could get her to do what I wanted her to do.” It was February 1979 when a quiet, shy young woman walked into Martin’s studio to serve as a model for his photography class. The ‘dancer’, as she modestly described herself, was Madonna Ciccone. She arrived in New York in 1978 having bought a one-way ticket from Michigan, with only $35 in her pocket. Life modelling for art classes was a way of making a living. Little did Martin know at the time that this more or less chance encounter would lead to one of the most memorable photo shoots of all time. After the huge success of Martin H.M. Schreiber’s Madonna Nudes in the 1990s the new edition Madonna Nudes + features many recently discovered and never published photos of Madonna besides a selection of the best images published in Madonna Nudes 1979 edition.
