  3. Sandalford own one of the oldest Vineyard plots in the Margaret River, planted in 1970 and this is where all the fruit for the premium range is drawn from. Still regarded as one of the best vintages in the region on record so expect to be blown away by the quality. This Shiraz is unmistakably varietal with seductive black fruit on the nose before a sweet, jubey fruit palate and some spicy, herbal tones. The oak is subtle, the finish long with loads of generous tannins. It will cellar well for the next decade but will pair well with steak, lamb or even venison.

  4. Frankland Estate Shiraz, just the very mention of it makes us go a bit giddy in the knees. It’s all that cooler climate spice that we gravitate to and we think you’ll love this spicy Shiraz from this five star rated winery. It’s dense and inky with an intense nose of black fruit, licorice and black pepper. It’s a rich, complex beast, exuding plum, chocolate and aniseed. Balanced and finely structured this will reward for many years to come. We simply don’t have the patience to wait.

  8. Australia’s love affair with sparkling reds, particularly Shiraz, is unique to the world of wine as no–one else really produces it. Strangely, it only seems to come out once a year, at Christmas time, but we feel that we should see more of this style of wine pioneered, particularly at Summer barbecues. This is a delicious example from Balgownie made with fruit from Bendigo and Heathcote. Dark fruit aromas backed up by chocolate and coffee it falls effortlessly onto the palate offering a real fizzy tang of fruit and coating the mouth in vibrant berried refreshment. A really good style, but please don’t wait till Christmas to open it

  9. Shiraz from Heathcote is a style that is intrinsically connected to the soil. Excuse us if we sound like hippies, but the notion of the soil imparting its imprint is essential to winemaking and Galli Estate understand this. The Cambrian soil of Heathcote is millions of years old and the perfect place for Shiraz to pick up some mineral characters. Concentrated and full of bold, black fruits and spice as well as an earthy complexity this wine makes even more sense with steak. Structured and balanced with impeccable length, no wonder they call it heavenly Heathcote.

  10. The search for cool climate Shiraz takes us all over the country but it’s the Yarra Valley that has a knack for doing subtle wines that over deliver. Seville Estate has been producing this Shiraz since the 70s and it’s been labeled one of Victoria’s most sought after reds. It’s lifted with cherries and a characteristic white pepper nuance that the Yarra is famous for.The palate is full and rounded with generous fruit and soft tannins, all it needs to complete the picture is a steak with peppercorn sauce.

  11. This is a more ballsy style of shiraz from Salomon, and certainly has a bit more oomph to it compared to the syrah viognier offering. Smells of ripe cherries and Christmas cake rise from the glass, along with star anise and pepper spice. The palate is full-bodied and quite sweetly-fruited, with tastes of plum jam and baked spices, a decent hit of toasted vanilla from the oak, a solid and slightly grippy line of tannins, and a long, juicy, toast and spice finish. Needs some slow roasted meats for company!

  17. 96 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday 4 International Gold Medals to date The Sidewood Vineyard is situated at the 300 acre Ashwood Estate in the cool-climate of the Adelaide Hills wine region, 380m above sea level. Climate, soil, careful pruning techniques and hand selecting play a vital role to ensure that only the best fruit is produced for Sidewood Wines. With the rows of vineyards planted facing East - West, this ensures that combined with intensive canopy management the intensity of the fruit flavour profile will be enhanced. This elegant and complex Shiraz has lifted aromatics of raspberry, blueberry, dark plum and hints of vanilla spice. The palate has an abundance of blackberry, dark red fruits and notes of dark chocolate. Tannins are rich and silky, the length is long and luxurious. An outstanding accompaniment to beef with black bean sauce or truffle pasta as a vegetarian option. “Has a highly fragrant bouquet, verging on outright perfume; spicy notes are part climate, part whole bunch-derived, and the multi-clone backdrop provides a beautifully poised palate. Very good value.” – 96 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday

  18. ‘The colour is excellent, the wine gloriously fresh and extremely complex, with vibrant plum and black cherry fruits, the tannins superfine.’ – 96 Points James Halliday Kangaroo Island is heavily influenced by the Southern Ocean’s breezes which play an important role in the ripening process. Although there is lots of sunshine on the island, crucial in ripening the grapes, the cooling sea breezes help protect the grapes from over-ripening on the vine. Even during periods of extreme heat Kangaroo Island’s vines are better protected than most mainland vineyards thanks to these maritime breezes which also lead to much cooler night-time temperatures, giving the vines a much-needed break from the heat in the warmer months. With winemaker Jacques’ Lurton’s Bordeaux upbringing it is perhaps unsurprising he considers blending of varieties to be a crucial element in creating great wine. In the same way a great chef uses a range of ingredients to make a complex dish, blending provides a winemaker with the opportunity to pick the best bits from different grape varieties to create a more complete and complex final wine. “A 65/35% blend; part carbonic maceration at 30?C for 10 days in a closed vat saturated with CO2; after 30 days the grapes are pressed and the rest of the fermentation is of clear juice alone, the remainder is normally fermented, and the parcels separately matured for 2 years in 630l barrels. The colour is excellent, the wine gloriously fresh and extremely complex, with vibrant plum and black cherry fruits, the tannins superfine.” – 96 Points James Halliday
