This is the 'big dog' from Primo Estate, and probably their most renowned wine. The palate is deep and brooding with more of those dark, chocolaty flavours, solid tannins, bright acidity, and a long, intense, chalky finish. It's epic stuff that will live for a few years.

  10. 12 x 2012 Smith & Hooper Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

This comes from the wine region of Wrattonbully which everyone struggles with on labels so they often just shorten it to 'Limestone Coast', which actually isn't any shorter at all (but don't tell them that). This is a genuine chocolatey red this, with that lovely earthen red edge that it's next door neighbour region (Coonawarra) is famous for. It probably needs a little sleep in the cellar, but lots of big flavour and structure to enjoy right now.

  16. 12 x 2012 Massoni Merlot

Picked when the grapes had developed the classic “chocolate” and “sweet tobacco” characters of ripe Merlot. The above average ripeness of the fruit meant that we did not need to work the fermentation aggressively to extract colour and flavour. After pressing the wine was matured in French and American oak hogsheads for 14 months prior to bottling in August 2013. Deep colour as normal in our Merlot. Spicy aromas of damson plum dark chocolate mulberry and black olive. Oak has been kept to minimum. Plummy, juicy mulberry flavours with round, generous mouth-feel. Layers of fruit mingle with spice and cedar from the oak maturation. This is an impressively structured merlot, built on strong foundation and shows how the variety can perform in the right condition. Its full body and generous proportion make it ideal to accompany rich meat dishes.

  17. 6 x 2012 Sevenhill Inigo Merlot

Can the Jesuit Priests at Sevenhill say a little prayer for the Merlot revival? A Merlot miracle we should say. Sevenhill is one of the oldest wineries dating back to 1851 and while sacramental wine was their craft for many years, table wine resulted and we are blessed by their work. Here’s a red that’s full bodied and robust with rich fruit flavours of blackcurrant and cherry, it’s smooth and reassuringly ripe on the palate with some interesting cedary oak.

  18. 6 x 2012 St Huberts Cabernet Merlot

Long before Pinot was the hero grape of the Yarra Valley, Cabernet was the red of the region. This blend pairs Cabernet and Merlot into a surprisingly harmonious package. The juicy fruit of the Merlot complements the structure of the Cabernet to produce an elegant red that cries out for lamb. Seductive notes of cherry and chocolate, with a little leafy lift before a soft mouthfeel of ripe fruit and firm tannins.

  19. 6 x 2012 Pikes The Dogwalk Cabernet Merlot

The Pikes name is synonymous for great quality Clare whites but we are equally impressed with their reds including this tasty blend. The Dogwalk is named in honour of the winemaker’s Labrador who is walked come rain or shine around this particular block of vines. Showing the best of both varieties, this displays blackcurrant as well as cedary oak. Dark fruit and chocolate flood the palate before tannins and acid merge to complete the picture. A very elegant blend that could only possibly be improved by matching it with a leg of lamb.
