  7. A wide range of colours in the smallest spaces The small succulent plants actually only consist of two thick, ramified leaves that accumulate moisture in copious amounts. At the end of summer spring from the center - depending on the variety - yellow, white, bright red or purple coloured flowers. Every year, a new leaf pair springs and grows out of the old one. The attractive bloomer only needs a small space on your windowsill, and it makes a neat colour arrangement in the smallest spaces possible. Natural Place: The Flowering Stones are native in southern Africa, where they grow mainly in areas with wintery precipitation and summery dryness. Cultivation: Seed propagation indoors is possible throughout the year. Spread the seeds onto finely sieved potting compost or cactus earth that contains about 25% sand and is moistened with a water vaporizer. For a light germinator you don’t need to put any potting earth on top. Cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the earth from drying out, but don’t forget to make some holes in the clear film and take it every second or third day completely off for about 2 hours. That way you avoid mold formation on your potting compost. Place the seed container somewhere bright and warm with a temperature between 20°C and 25°Celsius and keep the earth – preferably with a water sprayer – moist, but not wet. The first seedlings will come up after one or two weeks. Place: Flowering Stones prefer a bright and warm place, for instance at a window to the South. Care: The care of the Conophytum should go accordingly to the growth process. During the resting period in summer, you should water only sparsely and not more than once a week, while with beginning of the growth period in autumn, stronger watering is necessary - but avoid waterlogging, for instance in the saucer. From autumn until beginning of spring you may also give fluid fertilizer for cactus plants once a month. During Winter: During winter the Flowering Stones should be

  8. The frost-resistant insects catcher All pitcher traps work in the same simple and ingenious way. The prey is attracted by sweet nectar and alluring colouring, slides down on the slippery side of the tube and, because of the downwards pointing hairs inside, can’t get out anymore. In evolutionary terms, the Purple Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia purpurea) is said to be the most original of its kind. It catches the as fertilizer used insects in its tube filled with rainwater since – other than the Yellow Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia flava) – it doesn’t have a lid covering the tube. For decomposing the insects, the plant uses not only self-produced digestive enzymes, but also bacteria from the rainwater. Due to the long cold period in its natural habitat, the Purple Pitcher Plant develops the first flower stems only in July. The Yellow Pitcher Plant is considered the tallest species with 40 to 70 cm. Its tubes are upright and funnel-shaped at the upper end and are covered from the rain by a circular lid since it decomposes its prey exclusively through self-produced digestive enzymes. Around the middle of March, after flowering with up to 12 cm big blossoms, the plant keeps developing new tubes throughout the summer. Natural Place: The main distribution area of the Purple Pitcher Plant stretches from southern New Jersey to the Northeast of Florida. The Yellow Pitcher Plant can be found in the swamp areas of the coastal plains of the southeastern USA, reaching from Southeast Virginia until the Southeast of Alabama. Cultivation: Seed propagation indoors is possible throughout the year. To increase the germinability, you should keep the seeds sealed in a plastic bag in the regular refrigerator for about two weeks. After that, spread the seeds on moist potting compost and cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the earth from drying out. Don’t forget to make some holes in the clear film and take it every second or third day completely off for about 2 hours. That way you a

  11. A colourful combination of the species-richest beauties of the cactus plants The rather carefree Mammillaria counts around 400 species and is one of the most species-richest genera within the cactus plants. Instead of ribs, the sprouts grow nipples that gave the botanical name (mamilla = breast nipple) and that deploy the varied spines from the tips. From spring until early summer, the Mammillaria shows bell-flowers that grow either stray or wreath-shaped. Natural Place: The natural habitat of the Mammillaria stretches from the Southwest of the USA to Mexico, and through the whole of Central America until Columbia. The region with the most species, however, can be found in Mexico. Place: The Mammillaria needs plenty of sunlight to develop nicely. Plants that are kept in the sun throughout the year grow beautiful spines and flowers. Only the green-coloured varieties with less spines should be protected from the strong midday sun. During summer, you can also move your beloved cactus plants to a sunny place outdoors. Care: Using quality cactus soil for cultivation is the first step for a healthy plant. Since the Mammillaria prefers to be kept in a group, you should use a wider bowl rather than a pot for cultiv
