  3. 6 x 2012 Saltram Mamre Brook Barossa Valley Shiraz

Saltrams step it up here with this Mamre Brook shiraz from a pretty fine vintage. It's a full-bodied, rich number that shows ripe smells of sweet plums, black olives, pepper and anise spices, and toasted cedar on the nose. The palate is plush and juicy, with sumptuous spiced plum flavours, a solid line of savoury tannins, and a tight cedary, toasty finish. It will cellar for at least a decade, but if you can't wait, give it plenty of air and served with roast beef.

  4. Penfolds RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015

RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz expresses single region Barossa Valley shiraz matured only in French oak. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and lush texture. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa shiraz at the highest quality level. On the nose there is freshly sliced panforte - date, fig, with dried and fresh blue fruits that become more apparent upon sitting. Immediately recognisable cedary French oak - synergised by the liberation of sweet Moroccan spices and a propulsion of dried roasted almond. The 2015 vintage is more ostensibly textural than other red wines in The Penfolds Collection. Yet still super-saturated with red and blue-berried fruits and liquorices (both red and black). The tannins are fine, sleek and polished - all there to convey, not to confront. Lingers, ever so pleasantly. Once again spoilt by the generosity on the palate of what the Barossa does best.

Good hue and depth to the colour; a complex shiraz with an earthysavoury streak providing both texture and flavour to the dominant blackberry fruits; the tannins have been well handled, too. 14.5% alcohol." 92 points, James Halliday Wine Companion Magazine, Aug-Sept 2017."

5 days pre-ferment cold soak, open-fermented, hand-plunged, matured in oak (30% new) for 9 months. The fruit quality is a given, the special quality coming from the perfectly judged, spicy tannins and oak that, despite their power, leave the aftertaste fresh and clear." 94 points, James Halliday Wine Companion 2017 Edition."
