  3. Snobs Creek Estate Brookes Shiraz Cabernet Merlot 2015

The local shoemaker was known as Black Brookes, who lived at the bridge over Snobs Creek. He passed on in the late 1880's and the creek would forever be named after his most important tool, the Snob. The small anvil used to shape the toe end of a boot. The Brookes is a balanced wine showing ripe mixed dark fruits, mocha and spices with intense fruit cake aromatics from characteristically small bunches. Well integrated oak extends the palate to create a seductive cool climate wine.

  11. Penley Estate Helios Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

98 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday To create our contemporary Coonawarra wines, we’ve returned to traditional methods of viticulture. We’ve become down to earth (again), hands on and nurturing. It’s a gradual process, one that takes passion, commitment and a lot of hard work. The mark of a good vineyard is its balance – the consistency of the fruit, ripening at the same time. To make this happen, we’ve taken a more natural, holistic approach to vine, incorporating a range of techniques and processes. For a start, we are returning to hand pruning. While we still use machinery in some of our vineyards, the precision of hand pruning makes a difference to the consistency of the yield and the fruit. Eventually, all our vineyards will be pruned by hand. We have new irrigation and frost protection programmes in place (pretty essential in the frosty Coonawarra) as well as soil cultivation and moisture retention initiatives, because it’s all about the soil and how balanced and nutrient rich it is – we have a programme in place for that too. The worms are loving us at the moment (and so are the good bacteria) – our new viticulture culture is working. In many ways, Penley has gone back in time to create a new future, one that is reinvigorated from the soil to the fruit to the glass. - Source Winery “The packing (high-shouldered brown glass bottle) with the far extreme of minimalist labelling (the statutory requirements of vintage and alcohol on a detachable neck label) is doubtless calculated to attract discussion. So should the ravishing cabernet made by Yarra Valley winemaker Kate Goodman. It's only medium-bodied, but its intensity is of a scale seldom encountered. The cassis fruit is the ruby set in a necklace of bay leaf and superbly honed tannins. A vineyard bursting into song after 30 years of silence.” – 98 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday

  12. Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2015

Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped to forge Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. Bin 389 also exemplifies the judicious balance of fruit and oak. “It’s a wine with a ‘wow’ introduction. It throws beautiful, beautiful aroma. It’s distinguished by it. It’s sweet, pudding-like, like fresh vanilla, like lemon delicious. I went to taste this wine and couldn’t get past the nose; I just wanted to go on enjoying its aromatics. It’s smells every bit Penfolds but every bit itself. The palate is true to established form, with blackcurrant and bay leaf notes rigged to a powerful motor of tannin. Creamy/vanillin oak gets on with business too but again the fruit stares it down. From every angle this is a belter of a Bin 389. It’s best consumed any time between now and the apocalypse, or thereabouts. “ – 96 Points Campbell Mattinson “Matured for 12 months in American hogsheads (32% new). Unapologetically made with the don't fix if it isn't broken aphorism. It is tightly structured, with faultless attention to detail - wheels within wheels stuff, but inexorable in sending its black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant) flavour message. Despite its full body, and its far-reaching longevity, it's tailor-made for the saltbush lamb shoulder of tonight's dinner.” – 97 Points James Halliday ““A classic vintage with brilliant aromatic complexity, proportion and balance. “Pound for pound”, probably the wine of the 2017 release.” 98 Points Andrew Caillard MW
