The combination of Shiraz and Cabernet makes for such an easy drinking style that enhances any barbecue where red meat is the focus. 5. This Chardonnay is pure gold, in more ways than one. Firstly, it's a luscious gold in colour, but more importantly - it's under Rothbury's 'Classic' label. Each year, a single white and red wine is adorned with the original Rothbury Estate label from the 1970's to pay homage to their rich winemaking history. This excellent Hunter Valley Chardonnay received this honour, and it's hardly surprising with its excellent fruit and oak integration.

  6. Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped to forge Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. Bin 389 also exemplifies the judicious balance of fruit and oak. “It’s a wine with a ‘wow’ introduction. It throws beautiful, beautiful aroma. It’s distinguished by it. It’s sweet, pudding-like, like fresh vanilla, like lemon delicious. I went to taste this wine and couldn’t get past the nose; I just wanted to go on enjoying its aromatics. It’s smells every bit Penfolds but every bit itself. The palate is true to established form, with blackcurrant and bay leaf notes rigged to a powerful motor of tannin. Creamy/vanillin oak gets on with business too but again the fruit stares it down. From every angle this is a belter of a Bin 389. It’s best consumed any time between now and the apocalypse, or thereabouts. “ – 96 Points Campbell Mattinson “Matured for 12 months in American hogsheads (32% new). Unapologetically made with the don't fix if it isn't broken aphorism. It is tightly structured, with faultless attention to detail - wheels within wheels stuff, but inexorable in sending its black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant) flavour message. Despite its full body, and its far-reaching longevity, it's tailor-made for the saltbush lamb shoulder of tonight's dinner.” – 97 Points James Halliday ““A classic vintage with brilliant aromatic complexity, proportion and balance. “Pound for pound”, probably the wine of the 2017 release.” 98 Points Andrew Caillard MW

  7. 96 Points & Special Value Wine Campbell Mattinson Established in 1969, Taltarni is one of the founding wineries of Victoria's Pyrenees wine region. Owner John Goelet, a direct descendant of the Guestier wine merchant family of Bordeaux, discovered and purchased Taltarni Vineyard in 1972 after conducting a worldwide search for a site comparable to the great vineyards of Bordeaux. Today, Taltarni combines old-world traditions with innovative new-world techniques to produce a diverse range of high-calibre still wine “The days of excessively tannic Taltarni cabernets are long gone but the web of beautifully integrated tannin here is certainly a highlight. This is a class act. It's both rich and juicy, comes laden with dark berried flavour, and curls impressively out through the finish.” – 96 Points & Special Value Wine Campbell Mattinson

  16. They are hare, there and everywhere with their wines, and have garnered 5-stars from Halliday for a number of years. This cab merlot offering shows aromas of cassis, mint and crushed leaves on the nose, whilst the palate is quite fulsome and plummy, with licks of After Eight mints, spicy, toasty oak, fine-grained tannins, bright acidity, and a decent, red-fruited finish. This could well improve with a couple of years in the cellar.
