  7. St Henri is a time-honoured and alternative expression of Shiraz, and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual among high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any new oak. Proudly, a wine style that hasn’t succumbed to the dictates of fashion or commerce. St Henri is rich and plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters as it ages. It is matured in old, 1,460 litre vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character. Although a small proportion of Cabernet is sometimes used to improve structure, the focal point for St Henri remains Shiraz. “The stewed plums, the fresh boysenberry, the hint of leather, the general downplay of oak. It sits there, comfortable in its own skin, pretty much immune to the traffic of time. Move past the aromas with this release though and we see a fair bit if grunt; some meaty characters, a deep set of plums, almost a ferrous character, certainly peppercorns, florals. There’s a ramp of tannin here slightly outside the St Henri norm; it gives the wine a wee bit of strut. Just a wee bit. But we are certainly in excellent territory here.” – 95 Points Campbell Mattinson “A polished and effortless blueberry, satsuma plum and black olive integrity define a St Henri of enduring, fine-grained tannin structure, undeviating line and grand persistence. Nuances of pepper offer dimension and intrigue. There is an evenness and an effortless focus that set this vintage apart among the great St Henris, approachable from the outset and yet possessing surprising endurance.” – 97 Points Tyson Stelzer

  8. 96 Points & Special Value Star James Halliday Made by Phil Lehmann The Evangelist is sourced from three key sub-regions in the Barossa, each showcasing an distinguished example of old-vine-Shiraz. Eden Valley - 55 Year Old Vines. Ebenezer - 80 Year Old Vines and Stonewell - 80 Year Old Vines. “Strong colour; exceptional mouthfeel ex tannins; much more savoury, but not at expense of dark black fruits, anise; distinguished wine from three old vine vineyards in Eden and Barossa Valleys; very good tannins. Matured for 12 months in French hogsheads (50% new), then blended and matured for a further 6 months in older French oak.” – 96 Points & Special Value Star James Halliday

  9. So, how's this icon going with over eight years of development? Very well, we think. Earthy, leathery, savoury, dark fruit/mulberry, mocha notes, sweet black cherry, black olive and praline flavours on a finish with finely tuned tannins. The wine is starting to settle comfortably into middle-age with balanced, easy flowing grace. This 2009 is approaching its best but history tells us that St Henri's hold for many years.

Bountiful aromatics ascend "" initially redcurrant, cranberry, Christmas cake mix, and then the liberation of citrus (lime peel), fennel and olive. Middle Eastern spices also present "" sweet, not savoury (incl. cinnamon, nutmeg). And, not unexpected, something not present - oak! Palate Svelte. To please all tastes - the sweet "" zabaglione, custard, raw chocolate (cocoa); and the savoury "" (bone) marrow, star anise. Lingers, and certainly leaves a most appealing 'residual' impression for quite some time after ingestion.

  13. It's a big mouthful of juicy, sweet fruit in the dark plum and blackberry spectrum, along with generous licks of pepper spice, cloves, toastiness and earthy savouriness. It all presents itself on a very full-bodied palate, with fine, solid tannins, and a long, lingering finish with a kick of chocolate in the tail. This will cellar for a few years, but would be great with some rare beef tonight!

  14. GSM blends are amongst the most underrated in this country, and it really shouldn’t be that way. These blends have plenty to offer, especially with rich meaty dishes, and this one under the St Hugo label is a ripper! Abundant red and dark fruits leap put of the glass to tantalise the senses, along with licks of pepper spice, anise and toasted cedar. The palate is medium to full-bodied and juicy, with spiced raspberry and blackberry flavours, slinky tannins, and a long, strolling, sweet-fruited finish that will have you reaching for another sip. Awesome stuff!

  15. Black Clay soils are found all round the Barossa Valley and its gives a particularly generous and mouth filling style of Shiraz. This example from 2013 is chock-a-block full of moreish blackberry and leather fruits in a big, bold package. Fleshy and succulent it will drink beautifully over the next 3-5 years but is ready to rock'n'roll for red meat too.

  16. The St. Hallet name is like a promise of Barossa quality, known for their various interpretations of Shiraz from fruit sourced from different growers in the region. This mix of Shiraz and Grenache offers incredible juiciness for the price and should mingle well at a casual barbecue. It’s loaded with raspberry and cherry fruit, some attractive spice as well as hint of chocolate. Generous to a fault it’s what you call a reliable wine.

  17. Clare Valley Shiraz is so rich and long-lived but there’s one we anticipate with each new release and that’s the St Andrews from Taylors. This is top-drawer stuff that is recognised as one of the top premium reds in their portfolio. You can expect a nose that’s heavy in plum and sensual spice, vivid violet as well as a touch of vanillin oak. Although powerful, the palate shows real elegance with vibrant berry, spice and cedar. It’s generous and long with mouth-filling tannins that make it perfect for a fillet steak or a plate of cheese.

  20. Ancient vines. Sunny Barossan skies. Rich red dirt. Lots of Coopers beer.... All four of these elements combine to make this Shiraz a star. A thoroughly Barossan star at that, rich and ripe and wonderfully intense, dripping with classic flavours and silky flavours turned up to the max.
