  1. Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is arguably the most iconic figure of twentieth-century art, a highly enigmatic personality who not only altered the definition of art itself but also left in his wake a vast and staggeringly complex record of his activities. Warhol's archive consists not only of his artworks but also of 1,500 cardboard boxes, flat files and trunks filled with source material, memorabilia, correspondence and junk mail. The catalogue raisonnĂŠ constitutes an indispensable record of the artist's paintings, drawings and sculptures: some 15,000 works produced by the artist between 1948 and 1987, the year of his death. Volume 2 documents the artist's paintings, sculpture and installations made between 1964 and 1969, the important period known as 'The Factory Years', when Warhol began to acquire Pop Art fame as well as a cadre of collaborators and groupies - all of which made 'The Factory' into one of the most mythologized artist's studios ever, and Warhol's work at this time emblematic of his career as a whole. This volume documents 23 series and more than 1,400 individual works, including the well-known series Thirteen Most Wanted Men, the box sculptures, approximately 300 works in the Jackie series, and the 1964 and 1964-5 Flowers series, amongst others. As in Volume 1, Volume 2 includes a fascinating collection of source material: especially the rare studio photographs taken by Billy Name-Linich, who became The Factory's first de facto photographic historian. In this volume, editors Georg Frei and Neil Printz focus on Warhol's serial production, analysing the evolution of Warhol's working methods and the growing relationship between Warhol's exhibitions and his studio production. They establish a sophisticated and extensive chronology for the works of this period, many of which have been difficult to locate and to date, due to their seriality. The text provides both a compelling overview and an unparalleled deconstruction of Warhol's riveting story. The project

  2. The first in a multi-volume series on Warhol's complete artworks.Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is one of the most iconic figures of twentieth-century art, a highly enigmatic personality who not only altered the definition of art but also left in his wake a vast and staggeringly complex record of his daily activities. The Andy Warhol Catalogue RaisonnĂŠ, the definitive record of the artist's paintings, sculptures and drawings, cover some 15,000 works produced by Warhol between 1948 and 1987. Also included is an incredible array of rarely published source material, including newspaper scraps and movie star publicity stills that inspired Warhol's boundlessly fascinating life and career. The Andy Warhol Catalogue RaisonnĂŠ was initiated in 1977 by Thomas Ammann. The editors Georg Frei and Neil Printz began primary research in 1993 and have been advised throughout the project by the distinguished curators and art historians Kynaston McShine and Robert Rosenblum. Experts from the Andy Warhol Foundation personally examined the vast majority of Warhol's works and began a thorough review of his archive, which at his death consisted of some 1,500 cardboard boxes, flat files, and trunks filled with source material, memorabilia, correspondence and junk mail. The editors examined works in museum conservation facilities and discussed them with conservators, submitted works for review by the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board, and interviewed Warhol's assistants and colleagues to assemble a customized database of works unparalleled in Warhol scholarship. All of their findings are documented in this unprecendented project. Each annotated catalogue entry includes the works title, date, medium, dimensions and present owner, followed by a record of inscriptions, provenance, exhibitions and literature. Related works are linked by general introductory texts that explore historical circumstances, shared themes and studio practices. Supplementary figures to the texts illustrate source materials t

  9. Libraries are much more than mere collections of volumes. The best are magical, fabled places whose fame has become part of the cultural wealth they are designed to preserve. Some still exist today; some are lost, like those of Herculaneum and Alexandria; some have been sold or dispersed; and some never existed, such as those libraries imagined by J.R.R. Tolkien, Umberto Eco, and Jorge Luis Borges, among others. Ancient libraries, grand baroque libraries, scientific libraries, memorial libraries, personal libraries, clandestine libraries: Stuart Kells tells the stories of their creators, their prizes, their secrets, and their fate. To research this book, Kells traveled around the world with his young family like modern-day Library Tourists. Kells discovered that all the world's libraries are connected in beautiful and complex ways, that in the history of libraries, fascinating patterns are created and repeated over centuries. More important, he learned that stories about libraries are stories about people, containing every possible human drama. The Library is a fascinating and engaging exploration of libraries as places of beauty and wonder. It's a celebration of books as objects, a celebration of the anthropology and physicality of books and bookish space, and an account of the human side of these hallowed spaces by a leading and passionate bibliophile. About the Author STUART KELLS is an author and book-trade historian. His 2015 history of Penguin Books, Penguin and the Lane Brothers, won the prestigious Ashurst Business Literature Prize. Rare, his critically acclaimed biography of Kay Craddock - the first female president of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers - was published in 2011. An authority on rare books, Kells has written and published on many aspects of print culture and the book world.

  15. The sculpture and paintings of 1970-4 are the subject of this third volume of the catalogue dedicated to publishing the complete paintings, sculptures and drawings of Andy Warhol (1928-87). As authoritative and detailed as the highly praised first two volumes, here Warhol's sculptures and paintings of these four years are comprehensively catalogued and illustrated. Early in this period Warhol was concentrating on film and sculpture, as he had been since being shot in 1968, but by late 1971 or early 1972 he was returning to painting and developing his painterly, 'sloppy and fast' style; a dramatic shift from his 'hard' mechanical style of before 1968. The volume covers major sculptures, such as the Rain Machine, the series of paintings Mao and Man Ray, and commissioned portraits of important, celebrated and fashionable people of the day - many from Warhol's travels through Europe during this time. It is a time of great transition for Warhol, including developing his relationships with various media and the impact of his first purchase of a Big Shot Polaroid camera. His diaries and the photographs he took on travels and of his subjects enliven the narrative and give intriguing insights into his works of these years and his unique engagement with the culture and society of that time.

  16. In January 1964 Warhol moved his studio to East Forty-seventh Street and began to produce works in series, allowing him to create open-ended aggregations of boxes or canvases that could be combined, recombined, or left as single units. This volume of the catalogue raisonne reproduces the series "Thirteen Most Wanted Men"; seven distinct series of box sculptures, including "Brillo", "Heinz Ketchup", and "Del Monte Peach Halves", among others; the "Jackie Paintings", based on press coverage of the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963; a series of portraits, including 11 self-portraits; "Marilyn" and "Jackie" paintings of mid-1964, with which Warhol introduced a new procedure in the studio - painting in areas of local colour by hand; and the 1964 "Flowers" series, probably Warhol's earliest allusion to abstract painting. An important component of the source material in this volume is Billy Linich's rare photographs of works and people inside The Factory, as well as archival photos of gallery and museum installations showing original combinations of these serial works, and original newspaper clippings and silkscreen mechanicals.Whenever possible, catalogue entries attempt to record how and when a multi-canvas work came to be assembled in its present format. All works are reproduced in colour, with two-colour text that makes it easier for readers to find their way through the catalogue entries. These list for each work the standard data (dimensions, date, present owner, inscriptions and special notes), provenance, exhibitions and literature. Volumes are organized according to catalogue number, with works reproduced in numerical order, followed by the corresponding texts. this volume includes appendices documenting each of Warhol's solo museum exhibitions of the period, with a list of every work included in each exhibition. Additional reference material includes notes to the
