  2. The 'Trio' of Limestone Ridge, Pyrus and St George have been Aussie stalwarts for over four decades. They are made from Coonawarra fruit, and Limestone Ridge is made up of that good 'ole Aussie blend of shiraz and cab sav. It's a ripe, lush number that displays lots of dark-berried fruits with sniffs of anise, vanilla and subtle florals. The palate is dense and curvy, with sweet plum and pepper spice flavours, talcy tannins, and a mocha, licorice finish. It really does need a juicy steak to grapple with, but a bit of cellaring will settle it down.

  7. 97 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday Yangarra Estate is a biodynamic wine farm in the McLaren Vale region in South Australia. Ironheart represents the most elite Shiraz from their single vineyard estate. The name Ironheart captures the red-ish ironstone soils, along with the passion and soulful dedication to the soil vineyard and winemaking. “The dark Ironheart Shiraz is wound up like a coil, put it in a decanter and let it spring open. As a young wine the typical dark fruit aromas are elusive, but on the palate the power and concentration of the fruit unfolds, with big soft tannins so typical from this site, and the iron-like sanguine finish. A wine made to sustain the years ahead .” - Peter Fraser, winemaker. "From two vineyard blocks on a gravelly ironstone outcrop, a barrel selection that is said to focus on ironstone characters. Hand-picked, cold soak, 25% whole bunches, wild-fermented, matured in French oak (40% new) for 15 months. Sombre, earthy black fruits are so intense they momentarily stop the heart from beating. The texture and mouthfeel are such that they throw down the gauntlet to anyone seeking to drink more than a glass at this early (indeed far too early) stage of its life. The balance is spot on the money, so the long term future is assured." - 97 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday

  8. With vines planted by previous owner Otto Kasper using a cutting from an ageing and secret Shiraz clone, and tended to with almost antique machinery and a well-practiced hand, the Clos Otto vineyard consistently yields super low quantities with ultra rich flavours. The Clos Otto fruit is sourced from a small, eastern-facing block within the estate. The combination of the micro-climate (missing only the late afternoon sun) and the soil (red clay loam with underlying red plastic clay) found on this block provides the perfect conditions for premium Shiraz production. “Exceptionally deep, powerful and full-bodied; blackberry, blackcurrant, licorice, tar and dark chocolate gambol across the luxuriant palate, tannin and oak with secondary roles; in Hentley Farm style, manages to massage the mouth so thoroughly it throws off any idea of dead fruit or excessive extract.” – 97 Points James Halliday

  14. Appearance: Medium to full red with youthful vibrancy. Nose: The nose of this wine shows balanced oak contributing cinnamon and nutmeg, overlaying the ripe blood-plum fruit of Merlot. Palate: Medium bodied with silky smooth texture and long tannins. The excellent persistence and soft acidity make it a wonderful food wine. Food: Full flavoured poultry, such as twice-cooked duckling and modern Asian style cuisine. Cellaring: This wine is very approachable on release and will reward medium term cellaring. Alcohol: 14% Winemaking: Careful fruit selection from grapes grown on our Hamilton block in southern Coonawarra is the source of this wine. Vines were planted in 1987. Our aim is to make a stylish Merlot with great depth of flavour and structure, in which oak plays an important, but not prominent, role in the structure of the wine.

  15. Coonawarra reds are famous around the world, but often the region’s whites are overlooked. If you’re into rich dry whites, that aren’t over-the-top, then this Chardonnay is for you. You’ll love its peach, cream and cashew aromas and flavours and its smooth, creamy palate. The generous fruit flavours are balanced by cleansing acidity, which also gives it a long, satisfying finish. This wine is equally good with fancy foods like salmon or turkey as it is with fish and chips.

  16. This Coonawarra Cabernet Merlot displays dark cherry and plum aromas complemented with mocha and vanilla oak notes. Ripe fruit dominates the palate with plum, mulberry and dark cherry flavours elegantly integrated with vanilla oak. Best appreciated while the vibrant fruit flavours are still fresh, though will still reward cellaring for several additional years. Cellar for up to five years from the vintage.

  17. Jacobs Creek step it up a bit here with this cab sav from the classic region of Coonawarra. Medium to fuller-bodied in style, it shows lots of blackcurrants, crushed leaf, mint and black olives on the nose, meanwhile the palate is juicy and a little savoury, with a generous lick of toasted cedar, a fine but solid line of tannins, and a nice plummy finish with a kick of spiciness in the tail. It will cellar for a few years, but would be the bomb the beef spare ribs tonight.

  18. Jack steps up to the plate with this quite lovely cab sav out of the Coonawarra. Smells of blackcurrants, red berries, toasty oak and a hint of mint climb out of the glass, whilst the palate is fuller-bodied, juicy and slinky, with fine tannins, poised acidity, and a fruity, slightly oaky finish. It will benefit from another year in the cellar, but would be great tonight with a nice beef casserole.

  19. Coonawarra has produced some pretty nice chardys over the years, especially from producers like Wynns and Balnaves. This one from Jack Estate is a real peaches and cream number, that also shows hints of yellow citrus and toastiness. The palate is lighter-bodied, smooth and velvety textured, with those peachy flavours punching through, some bright citrusy acidity, and a soft, silky finish. Excellent with poultry dishes.
