  5. After the Public Heath Acts of 1872 and 1875, British local authorities bore statutory obligations to carry out sanitary improvements. Richardson explores public health strategy and central-local government relations during the mid-nineteenth-century, using the experience of Uppingham, England, as a micro-historical case study. Uppingham is a small (and unusually well-documented) market town which contains a boarding school. Despite legal changes enforcing sanitary reform, the town was hit three times by typhoid in 1875-1876. Richardson examines the conduct of those involved in town and school, the economic dependence of the former on the latter, and the opposition to higher rates to pay for sanitary improvement by a local ratepayer "shopocracy." He compares the sanitary state of the community with others nearby, and Uppingham School with comparable schools of that era. Improvement was often determined by business considerations rather than medical judgments, and local personalities and events frequently drove national policy in practice. This study illuminates wider themes in Victorian public medicine, including the difficulty of diagnosing typhoid before breakthroughs in bacteriological research, the problems local officialdom faced in implementing reform, and the length of time it took London ideas and practice to filter into rural areas.

  6. Many people sincerely believe that all vaccines are safe, adverse reactions are rare, and no peer-reviewed scientific studies exist showing that vaccines can cause harm. This book - Miller's Review of Critical Vaccine Studies - provides the other side of the story that is not commonly told. It contains summaries of 400 important scientific papers to help parents and researchers enhance their understanding of vaccinations."This book should be required reading for every doctor, medical student and parent. Reading this book will allow you to make better choices when considering vaccination." -David Brownstein, MD"This book is so precise and exciting in addressing the vaccine controversy that I read it in one evening. I recommend this book to any parent who has questions about vaccines and wants to be factually educated to make informed decisions." -Gabriel Cousens, MD"Neil Miller's book is a tour de force and a clarion voice championing the cautionary principle: 'When in doubt, minimize risk.' Let's talk science. Read this book. The truth will keep you and your children protected." -Bradford S. Weeks, MD"Nowhere else can one find such an organized and concise compilation of research on vaccines. Not only does Miller have a deep understanding of science and the issues at hand, he has made this book easy to reference and cite. Truly, there is no other guide out there quite like it. For everyone who contacts me in the future seeking scientific evidence about vaccines, I will recommend Miller's Review of Critical Vaccine Studies." -Toni Bark, MD, MHEM, LEED AP, previous Director of the pediatric ER at Michael Reese Hospital"Miller's Review of Critical Vaccine Studies is the most comprehensive and coherent accumulation of peer-reviewed research on vaccine issues and natural immunity I have ever come across. A must read for parents, teachers, doctors and other healthcare providers." -Dr. Tyson Perez, pediatric chiropractor

  9. The Parvac vaccine will only cover Parvovirus in dogs, and will not cover Hepatitis or Distemper. This vaccine comes as a single dose suitable for one dog. (The Manufacturer no longer makes the 10ml multidose, suitable for 10 dogs) The reason that we are able to sell this vaccine and why you can give it to your pet is because it is based on a "killed" virus. "killed" virus vaccines can be handled by anybody. The "live" virus vaccines are only able to be handled by a registered Veterinarian. "Live" virus vaccines include C3, C4 and C5. VACCINATION PROGRAMS: Puppies: It is recommended that puppies are vaccinated at the following ages 1st Vaccine 6-8 weeks 2nd Vaccine 12-14 weeks 3rd Vaccine 16-18 weeks. Adults/juveniles over 18 weeks: If never vaccinated before, 2 doses should be given 4 weeks apart. A yearly booster should be given to all dogs to maintain adequate immunity. N/B Dogs receiving their first course of vaccines will not be fully protected until 10 days after the final vaccine of their initial course. Do Not use in dogs that are incubating an infectious disease; seriously debilitated by another infectious disease, parasitic infestation or malnutrition; or under treatment with immunosuppressive drugs. Adverse Reactions As it is an inactivated vaccine, untoward systemic effects are very rare and the vaccine may be used in pregnant bitches. The adjuvant will cause a temporary local reaction at the injection site, though this is seldom visible. Careful palpation may reveal a small fibrous nodule in some dogs about one week after vaccination. This nodule will regress, becoming impalpable within two to six weeks. In a very few small, smooth coated dogs, such a nodule may be visible for a limited period. Dosage and Administration Give a 1 mL dose by subcutaneous injection in dogs of all ages; gently massage injection site to help disperse the vaccine. Annual booster vaccinations are recommended to maintain adequate immunity

  10. Canvac CCI (BB) immunises against Bordetella bronchisepta. This vaccine will protect against a component of kennel cough. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION: A 1ml dose of vaccine should be given by subcutaneous injection. Gentle massage at the injection site will help disperse the vaccine. VACCINATION PROGRAM: Two doses should be given at an interval of 4 weeks 1st Vaccine 12-14 weeks 2nd Vaccine 16-18 weeks Adult Dogs: If never vaccinated for Bordatella brochisepta before then 2 doses should be given at an interval of 4 weeks. Annual booster vaccinations are recommended to maintain adequate immunity, and a booster is recommended before exposure to possible sources of infection, such as shows, boarding kennels or obedience classes, especially if more than six months have elapsed since the dose of vaccine was administered. As Canvac CCi is an inactivated vaccine, untoward systemic effects are uncommon and the vaccine may be used in pregnant bitches. Dosage & Administration Shake gently before use. Administer 1mL dose subcutaneously. Hand warming the vaccine just prior to administration, ensuring subcutaneous administration and gentle massaging of the vaccination site, post vaccination, are recommended to help minimise any local site reactions. Precautions: Premedication with an antihistamine or corticosteroid is indicated in animals that have had a previous hypersensitivity reaction to vaccination. A small fibrous nodule may develop at the site of vaccination in some dogs. This nodule will regress within 26 weeks. A Type I hypersensitivity reaction, mainly characterised by urticaria and facial oedema is possible, particularly in animals receiving a second injection of Canvac CCi vaccine 4 8 weeks after the first injection. Occasionally, vaccinated dogs may show a non-specific systemic (pyrexia, anorexia and lethargy) or local reaction (pain on administration, swelling and discomfort at the injection site). These reactions are transient and of the type that may be expecte
