  5. Leeuwin Estate needs no introduction. They are world-famous for their Art Series chardonnay, and this expressive shiraz is an awesome, affordable red from these makers. Smells of dark berries, pepper spice, purple florals and a hint of smokiness lift from the glass, then the medium-bodied palate chimes in with sweet and spicy dark fruit flavours, suede-like tannins, and a good hit of earthy and pepper spices on the long finish. Excellent with a lamb ragu.

  6. Mildura has become a prized epicentre for the production of wine and Deakin were at the forefront of the regional revolution. The catch phrase has always been grab a Deakin and that’s because this wine offers so much for just so little. A cracking little barbecue wine, this shows Shiraz at its softest and most giving. Full of blueberry fruit that’s underpinned by a note of vanilla and spice, the wine shows a good balance between fruit and acids before a long, satisfying finish.

  7. Bellevue Estate is a family owned winery in the township of the world renown McLaren Vale wine region. Winemaker Corey Vandeleur produces only one product, the single vineyard Bellevue Estate Basket Pressed Shiraz. All wine is made on site in small two tonne open fermenters and hand shovelled via a small grape destemmer atop the fermenter allowing the fruit to enter the fermenter without the use of a must pump. After cold soaking 10% of the juice is run off to intensify colour and flavours. The fermenters are hand plunged prior to traditional hand rachet basket pressing. All wine is matured in french and american oak hogshead barrels for eighteen months. The wine is made with minimal intervention with no added tannins or finings. Only 1000 cases made.
