  2. Remember a time when cricket was cricket? Before millionaire players careered around a floodlit field in glorified pyjamas? When a proper match lasted days rather than the crash, bang, wallop of the limited-overs game? Modern innovations like Twenty20 and the IPL have their place in cricket’s long and glorious story, but nothing beats the original – as celebrated in this wonderfully nostalgic look at the game in bygone years. Looking back to a heyday of long hot summers and classic matches, When Cricket Was Cricket fondly recalls an era when it was a more enjoyable and carefree pastime – for the most part a sport conducted in a spirit of keen competitiveness but fair and thrilling play. Drawing on 100 years of outstanding photographs in the huge Mirrorpix archive, this book brings to life an age free of intrusive sponsorship and commercialism when huge crowds swarmed to see the stars of the day in action – legends such as WG Grace, Bradman, and Hobbs; famous greats of the post-war era like Sobers, Miller and Trueman; and more recent heroes such as Botham, Warne, Tendulkar and Lara. Ranging from the grandest venues to the humblest village pitches in its depiction of the sport’s golden years, this is the perfect illustrated guide to when it really was cricket!

  6. In the 1860s the game of cricket was hugely popular and often played between neighbouring pastoral stations in Western Victoria. One day at Pine Hills station, a tall aboriginal boy steps out from the phalaris grass and joins in a game of cricket. He shows them all how to play the game with skill, grace and flair. His name was Unaarramin or Johhny Mullagh from Mullagh Station. Touring England, playing for the Melbourne Cricket Club and for his local club the Harrow Cricket Club Johnny Mullaghs achievements in batting and bowling are comparable to the best the game has ever seen. Fifteen years before Test Cricket began, Johnny Mullagh became a true sporting legend, his feats making him one of Australia’s first international cricket stars. A cricketing hero to a white audience, he was also a man caught between two worlds, facing racism and discrimination his entire life. 7. Collected together in words and pictures Those Summers of Cricket pays homage to Richie Benaud’s life. The many contributions bring his life into sharp focus for the many generations who only know him as the ‘voice’ of cricket. And through each piece, often written by an ex-Australian cricket team member or captain or cricket writer or sports commentator or Richie Benaud himself, we learn more about the brilliant career that unfolded. Along the way the many accolades accorded Richie as he went from club cricket, district and State cricket to leading the Australian Cricket Team are documented from newspapers and reports. Richie Benaud’s own words tell of growing up in Jugiong and later western Sydney. His brother tells of Richie’s selection into the Australian cricket team. Among the contributing pieces to this anthology are those from ex-Test captains Greg Chappell and Ian Chappell; ex-coach Australian cricket coach John Buchanan; ex-Australian cricketers Dennis Lillee and Alan Davidson; cricket writers Gideon Haigh, Simon Hughes, Malcolm Knox, Leo McKinstry (UK), Jim White (UK), Daniel Brettig, Steve Cannane, and commentator Mike Atherton. 16. It starts in a suburban backyard with Darren Keefe and his older brother, sons of a fierce and gutsy single mother. The endless glow of summer, the bottomless fury of contest. All the love and hatred in two small bodies poured into the rules of a made-up game. Darren has two big talents- cricket and trouble. No surprise that he becomes an Australian sporting star of the bad-boy variety – one of those men who’s always got away with things and just keeps getting. Until the day we meet him, middle aged, in the boot of a car. Gagged, cable-tied, a bullet in his knee. Everything pointing towards a shallow grave. The Rules of Backyard Cricket is a novel of suspense in the tradition of Peter Temple’s Truth. With glorious writing harnessed to a gripping narrative, it observes celebrity, masculinity – humanity – with clear-eyed lyricism and exhilarating narrative drive.

  17. The essential and fully revised guide to interpreting the Laws of Cricket.Tom Smith first wrote his guide for umpires and scorers in 1980. Since then, his indispensable guide has gone through six fully-revised editions. The ‘new’ Tom Smith is the first to be fully redesigned and updated for the 21st century. Its publication coincides with international recognition that there should be one universal standard for the training of umpires whatever country they operate in.The ‘new’ Tom Smith incorporates the full 2000 Code of the Laws of Cricket with subsequent amendments as ratified by the MCC and international and national cricket bodies. The freshly drawn diagrams are easy to follow and will be of value not only to umpires and scorers, but to all lovers of the game of cricket. As Richie Benaud, the great Australian cricketer and commentator, has said, he never goes without his copy of ‘Tom Smith’. Nor should any spectator who wishes to feel fully qualified in discussing the application of the Laws of Cricket to the game.David Lloyd says, ‘Tom Smith is just as valuable a piece of kit as Hawkeye, Snicko and Hotspot in the Sky Sports commentary box, its interpretation of the Laws of the game is the first thing we turn to regarding decisions. it’s a “must-have” alongside the Laws of cricket.’

  18. A fascinating account of how two BBC broadcasters battled for the soul of English cricket during a time of great social change For more than a quarter of a century after the Second World War, as the BBC tightened its grip on the national consciousness, two of the most famous English voices were commentators on games of cricket. John Arlott and E.W. (‘Jim’) Swanton transformed the broadcasting of the nation’s summer game into a national institution. For any cricket follower in his fifties or older, just the mention of their names immediately evokes a flood of memories. Swanton was born into a middle-class family and privately educated; Arlott was the son of a working-class council employee, educated at state schools until he left at the age of sixteen. Because of their strong personalities and distinctive voices – Swanton’s crisp and upper-class, Arlott’s with its Hampshire burr – each had a loyal following in the post-war years, when England’s class system had a slot for almost everyone. Within a few minutes of the start of a conversation, it would be possible to identify the speaker as an Arlott or a Swanton man. Arlott and Swanton never grew to like each other, but both typified the contrasting aspects of post-war Britain and the way both it and the game they loved was to change. As England moved from a class-based to a more egalitarian society, nothing stayed the same – including professional cricket. Wise, lively and filled with rich social and sporting history, Arlott, Swanton and the Soul of English Cricket shows how these two very different men battled to save the soul of the game as it entered a new era.
