  1. The classic cookbook, now fully updated and revised With "The New Boston Globe Cookbook," the beloved "Boston Globe Cookbook""—which was first published in 1948 and has sold almost 100,000 copies in Globe Pequot Press editions since the 1980s"—comes back to life in all its glory, now also reflecting the flavors of the twenty-first-century city. Revised and updated by "Boston Globe "food editor Sheryl Julian, it features full-color photographs and the addition of ethnic recipes—Greek, Middle Eastern, Asian, and more—as well as new twists on old New England favorites. New recipes come from the cooks who have written for the "Boston Globe"'s food pages in recent years, while staples from earlier editions still remain; and recipe adjustments have been made that reduce fat, leavening agents, and flour. A new introduction looks back at the history of this renowned title as well as the exciting changes that reflect the way we eat today. The recipes range from baked bean dishes and simmered meats and vegetables to Brazilian breakfast eggs and Vietnamese pot-fried rice.

  3. Genkouyoushi is a type of Japanese paper used for writing. It is printed with vertical columns of squares, with each square designed to accommodate a single Japanese character or punctuation mark. Genkouyoushi may be used with any type of writing instrument (pencil, pen or ink brush), and with or without a shitajiki. While in the past Genkouyoushi was used for all types of manuscript writing (essays, creative writing, news writing and so on), in most cases the advent of the computer means that this is now the preferred medium, although some Japanese word processing software still includes a Genkouyoushi template. However, Genkouyoushi is still very widely used, especially by students. Primary and secondary students in particular are required to hand in assignments written on Genkouyoushi, and essays for school entrance examinations are also written on the paper, making knowledge of the correct way to use Genkouyoushi essential. Some programs of Japanese as a foreign language also require or encourage their adult students to use Genkouyoushi for practice or formal assignments or both, as use of the paper helps students to learn correct spacing when writing vertically.

  9. David Cooper's book reappraises the evidence regarding the early battles for Wessex territory. It charts the sequence of battles from the c. AD 500 siege of Badon Hill, in which the Britons defeated the first Saxon attempt to gain a foothold in Wessex territory, to Langport in 710, which consolidated King Ine's position and pushed the Britons westwards. Discussion of the post-Roman British and Germanic factions provides context and background to Badon Hill, which is then covered in detail and disentangled from Arthurian legend. In considering how the opposing commanders are likely to have planned their campaigns, enduring principles of military doctrine and tactics are discussed, using examples from other periods to illustrate how these principles applied in Dark Ages Britain. Going on to follow subsequent campaigns of the West Saxons in southern Britain, a credible assessment is made of how these resulted in the establishment of a viable Wessex kingdom, two centuries after Badon. Grounded in the latest academic and archaeological evidence, David Cooper offers a number of new insights and ideas. The book features 16 b/w illustrations. About the Author David Cooper OBE is a retired British Army Lieutenant Colonel with 36 years' service. He was initially taught military history and doctrine by the Burnham lecturers at Sandhurst and later gained a Masters degree in Defence and International Affairs. In the latter part of his career David instructed young officers in doctrine and tactics and wrote related publications for the British Army. Due to an abiding interest in the period he began to study the Dark Age Wessex campaigns in detail in 2002, and this book is the result.
