Fitbit Versa 3 Fitness Activity Tracker

Fitbit Fitbit Versa 3

$370.90 - $370.90

Is third time the charm?

The Versa line has proved to be quite successful for Fitbit, but the lack of on-board GPS detracted from the Versa 2’s abilities. The Fitbit Versa 3 not only fixes that problem, but also comes with a better display than its predecessor. A few design tweaks means it looks better too and, with a plethora of fitness statistics on tap, it’s a very compelling wearable for anyone on a budget.

In fact, the Versa 3 is almost as capable as the Fitbit Sense – the only features it misses out on that the more premium wearable offers is stress management and advanced heart monitoring. However, a lot of the in-depth fitness stats are behind the paywall of the Fitbit Premium subscription, which is the case for the Versa 2 and the Sense as well.

Despite that, there’s a lot the Versa 3 can do, including monitor blood oxygen levels while you sleep, track your outdoor workouts in real time thanks to the built-in GPS – which isn’t pinpoint accurate but as close as won’t make a difference for the average user – and offers the option of an always-on display.

The only complaint we have about the Versa 3 is its side button, or rather the lack thereof. Fitbit has redesigned that button to be an inductive indent that provides haptic feedback when activated. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been implemented well here and it takes a couple of attempts to find the right spot to press to bring up the menu system. The one design tweak that we’re big fans of, though, is the new strap-release mechanism. A small button releases the latch and a new strap can simply be clipped into place.

Like the Versa 2, there’s Alexa on board and, after Google bought Fitbit, Google Assistant is also available, albeit with limited functionality at the time of writing. Unlike its predecessor, however, the Versa 3 has a mic and speaker on the side of the chassis which, in theory, should allow you to take calls but the functionality hasn’t been rolled out as yet. Even the charger is different from the one for the Versa 2, which is now a magnetic dock that tops up the Versa 3 far quicker than the previous iteration.

In terms of battery life, the Versa 3 offers up to six days of juice with GPS used 2-3 times a week. If you’re a fan of the always-on display, however, and use the GPS everyday, you will need to charge the device every single day.

Score: 4/5

Verdict: An improved display, built-in GPS, two voice assistants and in-depth fitness tracking makes the Fitbit Versa 3 a significant step-up from its predecessor. It also offers decent battery life for a smartwatch, better than what Samsung and Apple do, and it suits most wrists. And considering it’s available at a lower price point than either of the aforementioned brands make the Versa 3 a very compelling alternative.

With integrated GPS and some design tweaks, the Fitbit Versa 3 is an excellent wearable. Like its predecessor, though, it’s more a fitness tracker than a smartwatch, with very limited productivity apps on offer. What you do get is great battery life, a better display than before, and a plethora of fitness statistics, making this a very compelling and affordable Apple Watch alternative. However, given this is the third iteration of the popular Versa line, it's a little disappointing that Fitbit is still not quite hitting the mark in some areas.
