  3. Wow! This has to be the ultimate value party starter. Made the same way as Champagne, it shows lots of citrus, stone fruits and red berries on the nose, which translates quite well to the palate. It's all wrapped up in fine bubbles, a creamy mouthfeel, a zesty acidity, and would go well with that prawn cocktail you are kicking the party off with.

  4. Hailing from the home of shiraz, the Barossa Valley, comes this smooth and sumptuous offering from the masters of value Jacobs Creek. Aromas of fleshy plums and blackberries jump out of the glass, along with sniffs of toastiness and pepper spice. The palate is medium to fuller-bodied and lush, with juicy dark fruit flavours, a generous lick of coconut oak, fine tannins, and a juicy, smooth finish. A bargain!

  9. Jacobs Creek step it up a bit here with this cab sav from the classic region of Coonawarra. Medium to fuller-bodied in style, it shows lots of blackcurrants, crushed leaf, mint and black olives on the nose, meanwhile the palate is juicy and a little savoury, with a generous lick of toasted cedar, a fine but solid line of tannins, and a nice plummy finish with a kick of spiciness in the tail. It will cellar for a few years, but would be the bomb the beef spare ribs tonight.

  10. Riesling from the Barossa! Yes! Some pretty spiffy rieslings have come out of this region, and this one is no different. Aromas of honeysuckle florals and lime citrus rise from the glass before descending on the light-bodied, dry palate, along with a talcy mouthfeel, frisky acidity, and a bright, limy finish. It's best drunk over the next couple of years to get the best out of it.

This bonny little savvy is certainly a tropical number, with truck-loads of passionfruit, grassiness, melons and lemon citrus winding up the nasal passages before pouring onto the light-bodied, crisp palate. It's all wrapped up in racy acidity and a dry, fruity finish that is bound to satisfy with a slight chill on a warm day.
