  1. Penfolds St Henri holds a special place in the hearts and minds of true Australian Shiraz lovers. Matured for 12 months in 50+ year old seasoned oak vats, St Henri has a track record for cellaring the envy of most. An elegant and pure tannin structure is what sets it apart from the rest of the Penfolds red wine range, but along with those building blocks comes velvet texture, opulence and generosity. This generosity is on full display with this 2008 coming from the vintage of 'two halves'. Peter Gago has stated the fruit used was all picked before the heatwave ensuring a trademark elegant St Henri, yet the opulence and viscosity is on full display. Please note: Limit of 6 bottles per customer

  2. St Henri was developed in the mid 1950s by John Davoren, a contemporary of Max Schubert, who set out to create a wine which captured the richness of ripe Shiraz without oak influence and had the capacity to support extended cellaring. The first commercial release of St Henri was the 1957 vintage in 1958. The St Henri style is in distinct contrast to Grange and Penfolds overall wine-making style, with the wine matured mostly in large, 2000 litre oak casks which impart almost no wood character. In style, St Henri is an elegant wine that relies on varietal definition and structure.

  4. St Henri is a time-honoured and alternative expression of Shiraz, and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual among high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any new oak. Proudly, a wine style that hasn’t succumbed to the dictates of fashion or commerce. St Henri is rich and plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters as it ages. It is matured in old, 1,460 litre vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character. Although a small proportion of Cabernet is sometimes used to improve structure, the focal point for St Henri remains Shiraz. “The stewed plums, the fresh boysenberry, the hint of leather, the general downplay of oak. It sits there, comfortable in its own skin, pretty much immune to the traffic of time. Move past the aromas with this release though and we see a fair bit if grunt; some meaty characters, a deep set of plums, almost a ferrous character, certainly peppercorns, florals. There’s a ramp of tannin here slightly outside the St Henri norm; it gives the wine a wee bit of strut. Just a wee bit. But we are certainly in excellent territory here.” – 95 Points Campbell Mattinson “A polished and effortless blueberry, satsuma plum and black olive integrity define a St Henri of enduring, fine-grained tannin structure, undeviating line and grand persistence. Nuances of pepper offer dimension and intrigue. There is an evenness and an effortless focus that set this vintage apart among the great St Henris, approachable from the outset and yet possessing surprising endurance.” – 97 Points Tyson Stelzer
