Christmas gift ideas for the person that’s hard to shop for
Find the right gift for that special someone that’s hard to buy for with these ideas.
Believe it or not, we’re already in December – which means that Christmas is right around the corner.
Arguably the hardest thing about Christmas is figuring out what gifts to buy for the important people in your life. And what makes that even trickier are the people who are impossible to shop for – either because they already have everything they need (at least theoretically), or don’t like material things.
The good news is that there are a variety of alternative gifts that can work in these circumstances. To help, we’ve assembled a curated gift guide full of ideas perfect for the people who have everything and want nothing.
Experience based gifts
Instead of buying something materialistic, why not give the gift of an experience? This is something that someone probably wouldn’t think to buy for themselves but could be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Groupon
Price: From $15
Delivery time: Instant (digital code)
Choose from a wide range of gift options from Groupon, from dining experiences to Gold Class movie tickets to spa days, there's something for everyone, and prices start from as little as $15.
To make it easier, Groupon even has specific categories such as for him, for her, for couples and also experiences categorised by interest such as experiences for foodies, for relaxing and for sport fans.
Alternatively, if you are having trouble choosing, you can opt for a Groupon gift card to give them the freedom to choose their own gift?
Lots of Groupon’s experiences are also on sale as of December 4, 2025, so you may even be able to score a deal.
Food subscriptions
Want a delicious gift that keeps on giving? A food subscription is the answer!
These can be a perfect gift for people with busy lifestyles who don’t have time to cook every night.

HelloFresh is one of the most popular meal kit delivery services in Australia, famous for its easy to follow recipes and fresh ingredients. What you may not have realised is that HelloFresh also sells gift cards.
A gift card from HelloFresh is quick and easy to organise and it allows the receiver to choose their own meal kits and have them delivered when it best suits! As well as being convenient, a gift card is a great way for someone to test HelloFresh for the first time without having to pay to decide if they like it.
A $75 gift card will feed two people for 3 nights and the other options are $90, $125 or $160 so you have options depending on your budget.
EveryPlate

Gift hampers
Price: From $49
Delivery time: Between 2 - 12 business days depending on delivery location
A gift hamper is an easy but thoughtful present and Gourmet Basket makes finding the perfect thing easy, with dozens of hampers to choose from. A hamper is a great idea for someone who lives far away or someone you won’t see on Christmas because Gourmet Basket will deliver it for you.
In terms of hamper options, Gourmet Basket has a wide range of options including hampers that revolve around food and drink such as chocolate hampers for the sweet tooths, tea and coffee hampers for hot beverage lovers and even cheese and wine hampers or champagne and sparkling hampers for those who love a tipple.
There’s also a range of more unconventional options, like pamper hampers that feature things like bath robes, towels, eye masks, candles and skincare, or picnic hampers that are stocked full of goodies that can be taken somewhere and enjoyed – and the picnic basket can be reused after.
If none of the premade options appeal to you, you can even create your own hamper.
The best bit is, the hamper will be delivered for you – just bear in mind that if you want your order delivered on Christmas Day, there are strict order cut-off dates.
Subscription boxes
These days, you can sign up for subscription boxes for a whole range of categories, from specific foods or drinks (such as American treats, alcohol or coffee beans) to books and even self care products. A subscription box is a great gift as it isn’t just a one time thing – the receiver will get an exciting new box multiple times, for however long you decide to purchase.
Tokyo Treat
Price: From $32.50 per month (for a 12 month plan)
Delivery time: Monthly (order by 12 December to make sure they receive the December box)
For anyone who’s been to Japan or tried Japanese treats, you’d know they’re some of the best, with an extraordinary variety of unique creations and flavours, such as limited-edition flavoured Kit-Kats to all sorts of other chocolates, lollies, biscuits and chips.
For someone with a sweet tooth or someone who just loves all things Japan, a Tokyo Treat subscription is sure to be well received. Each month, they will receive a new themed box full of snacks that are only available in Japan as well as a 20-page guide on that month’s snacks.
With gift subscription options available for 3 months, 6 months or 12 months, there’s lots of flexibility in terms of price although generally speaking the longer the subscription, the cheaper the monthly cost. Prices range from $32.50 per month for the 12 month plan ( a total of $404 for the year), and $35.50 per month for a 3 month subscription.
Who Gives A Crap
Price: From $40 (for 24 toilet rolls)
Delivery time: 2-3 days
Who Gives a Crap is an Australian brand that makes toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, cloths, plastic bags and pet poo bags from recycled paper products or bamboo grown specifically for this use. While gifting someone toilet paper (or any other Who Gives A Crap product) may initially seem a bit bizarre, it’s actually a very practical gift because we all use these things in our daily life and the costs can add up (to say nothing of the environmental impact of regular toilet tissue). That said, we’d still caution that you might want to give some thought to how this gift will be received by your giftee before purchasing, because toilet paper or other hygiene supplies aren’t everyone's idea of a good gift.
All of WGAC’s products can be bought as one offs, or you can sign up for a subscription and have them delivered on a schedule, with various options to suit different household sizes.
Who Gives A Crap also donates 50% of its profits to a charity to help provide clean water and sanitation around the world. So really, this isn’t just a gift for whoever you buy it for, but a charitable donation as well.
Amazon Gift Card
Price: From $1
Delivery time: Immediately (via email)
As an online store that sells (almost) everything, Amazon can be a great option for a gift card because no matter who you’re buying for, they're basically guaranteed to find something they want. From home and kitchen appliances to tech, beauty and fashion products to toys and even grocery items, there’s something for everyone.
An Amazon gift card can also be used to buy Kindle books, Amazon Music and to pay for an Amazon Prime subscription, so it’s very versatile. You can also choose whether you want your gift card to be emailed to the recipient (immediately or scheduled) or you can have a physical card delivered to you or you can print it at home.
Gift cards can also be made out to any amount between $1 and $2,000.
Streaming subscriptions
Most Australian households have at least one subscription to a streaming service, but the cost of being signed up to several can quickly add up. Gifting someone a 3, 6 or 12-month subscription to a streaming platform they don’t have is a great unconventional option that’ll let them stream their favourite shows without having to worry about the ongoing cost.
Netflix
Price: From $20
Delivery time: Immediately (via email or text mesage)
I can’t think of a better gift than free access to Netflix’s entire library. With its extensive range of content, including Netflix Originals like Stranger Things, The Crown and Squid Games as well as thousands of other movies and shows to choose from. Netflix gift cards can be bought online at Amazon where you can choose the amount you wish to spend and the gift card will be delivered to the recipient via email or text message. Not only is it quick and easy, but I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t appreciate the gift of endless entertainment. Netflix gift cards are available in three amounts - $20, $50 and $75.
Amazon Prime Video
Price: From $1
Delivery time: Immediately (via email)
You can’t buy a gift card solely for Amazon Prime Video, but as mentioned above, you can buy a general Amazon gift card that can then be used to pay for an Amazon Prime subscription.
For someone who only has a subscription to one of the more mainstream platforms, an Amazon Prime subscription is the perfect gift to allow them to broaden their horizons. With a wide range of content including classics like Suits, Seinfeld, The Office and Parks and Recreation as well as exclusive Prime, Paramount+ and Hayu content, there’s something for everyone.
Amazon gift cards can be loaded up for any amount between $1 and $2,000, but if you want the gift card to be used towards an Amazon Prime subscription, each month costs $9.99, or a yearly subscription can be had for $79. And as a backup, if your giftee doesn’t want to subscribe to Prime, they can use the card’s value to purchase something else from Amazon.
Disney+
Price: $119.99
Delivery time: Immediately (via email)
If you have a Disney (or Marvel) lover in your life who doesn’t already have a subscription to Disney+, the gift of a free subscription is a bit of a no-brainer. Currently, the only gifting option available is a year-long Premium subscription which costs $209.99 which may be out of some people’s budgets, but if you’re feeling generous, this is a great gift.
Also note that you’ll need to (stealthily) check your loved one’s subscription status prior to purchasing, as a Disney+ gift subscription is only available to someone who hasn’t used the service before. However, there is always the sneaky workaround of using a different email address…
Ancestry.com DNA kit
Price: From $59 (plus shipping)
Delivery time: Within 10 days
Who doesn’t want to know more about their ancestry? An Ancestry DNA Kit is a unique and very personal gift, allowing the receiver to uncover more about their heritage and hopefully find new family connections. The best part is that these kits are currently on sale, so you can pick one up for just $59.
