What are the Boxing Day sales?

Boxing Day sales are traditionally held every year on Boxing Day (26 December) and can often run until early January (and sometimes beyond).

Boxing Day Sales started in the 1980s, with retailers using the post-Christmas period to sell excess stock at a cheaper price.

Today, Boxing Day is one of the biggest yearly sales event both in Australia and around the world with most retailers offering serious bargains. While the US doesn’t hold Boxing Day sales, most Commonwealth countries such as the UK, Canada and New Zealand participate in this major shopping event.

Boxing Day sales are a great opportunity to pick up the things you’ve been eyeing off all year while they are discounted, or if you happened to miss out on picking up that big-ticket item during Black Friday. In past years we’ve seen great discounts on tech, fashion, beauty and much more.

When are Boxing Day sales?

You might think that the Boxing Day sales would start on Boxing Day, however this is not always the case. While some retailers start their sales on December 26, the majority of retailers kick off their sales earlier, sometimes from as soon as December 1st.

With some Boxing Day sales starting in early to mid December, they can be a great opportunity to snag some Christmas gifts at a cheaper price if you didn't already do so during Black Friday.

To make sure you don’t miss out on any deals, we recommend keeping this page bookmarked so you can stay up to date on all the latest Boxing Day sales information.

How long do Boxing Day sales last?

Depending on the retailer, Boxing Day sales can last anywhere from a few days to over a month or while stocks last. In past years, we’ve seen most retailers end their sales in mid to late January, offering a chance to snag some back-to-school gear for less.

While some sales may last for weeks, the most popular items and those with the best discounts are usually the first to sell out. So be sure to get in quick!

Is Boxing Day bigger than Black Friday in Australia?

Boxing Day and Black Friday sales are definitely the two biggest sales events in Australia. Although the hype and awareness of Boxing Day sales continues to remain high in Australia, since around 2018 interest in Black Friday has eclipsed Boxing Day according to Google Search trends.

Despite not being as big as Black Friday, the Boxing Day sales are still a great opportunity to pick up the items you want at a relatively lower price.
