About Optus

Optus originally began its existence in 1981 under the brand name Aussat, operating as a subsidiary of the government-owned telecommunications company Telecom Australia (now known as Telstra). Aussat’s assets were privatised in 1991 and acquired by a consortium named Optus Communications, which then went on to become Australia’s second major telecommunications company and sought to compete directly with Telecom.Today, Optus is one of Australia’s three biggest telecommunication companies, alongside Telstra and Vodafone. The company has been able to stand out and create a name for itself due to the comprehensive range of services it offers as well as its extensive coverage around Australia. According to Optus, its 3G mobile network covers an impressive 98% of the population while its 4G network covers 96.6% of Australia. As for 5G, as of April 2023, Optus’s 5G network covered 12.1% of Australia but it is continually expanding. The widespread reach of Optus’s coverage has greatly contributed to its popularity, as customers trust that Optus will keep them connected reliably across the most populated areas of Australia, regardless of their location. As well as offering a range of mobile services including postpaid and prepaid options, Optus also offers fixed-line internet and home phone services suitable to both residential and business customers. It offers NBN, 4G and 5G internet connections, with a variety of plans at different speed tiers so customers can choose the option that best suits their needs. In 2016, Optus diversified its portfolio with the launch of its very own entertainment service – Optus Sport. The launch coincided with Optus’s acquisition of the broadcast rights for the English Premier League in Australia. Having exclusive rights to the EPL has meant that the streaming platform has cornered a large area of the market – football fans.
