About Nike AU
Nike needs no introduction, being one of the most popular sports shoes and activewear apparel brands in the world. It was founded in 1964 by Phil Knight, a track-and-field athlete at university, and his coach Bill Bowerman. It was Bowerman’s fascination with running shoes and how they optimised performance that sparked the idea for the company. He was constantly playing with different shoe models and coming up with custom designs, something he learned from a local cobbler. Phil Knight was the first student to try one of Bowerman’s custom shoes which, when it proved to be very successful, piqued Knight’s interest in the production of running shoes. In 1962, he made a deal with a Japanese businessman to bring Japanese Tiger shoes (now known as Asics) to the US. Bowerman liked the samples so much that he offered to become a partner in the business and the company Blue Ribbon Sports (now known as Nike) was born. Nike’s rise in popularity was mostly due to its famous ad campaign and motto “Just Do It”, along with various celebrity endorsements with famous athletes such as Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Michael Jordan, just to name a few. Signing Michael Jordan in 1984 resulted in the launch of the popular Air Jordan series, and it continues to be Nike’s most lucrative endorsement of all time.
